THE LONG RIDE TO AFRICA-
RIDE FOR LIFE!
The GAMBIA HORSE AND DONKEY TRUST are organising the largest horse relay-riding event ever attempted in the UK. The Long Ride to Africa - The Ride for Life.
The aim of the 'Ride for Life' is to cover the distance of a simulated horseback ride from London to Banjul the capital of The Gambia, some 2,783 miles... as many times as we can! By as many UK horse riders that can take part.
The ride has been organised to raise awareness of the plight of the working horses in Africa and
the important role that these animals play in the fight against poverty and starvation, and to support the global
MAKE POVERTYHISTORY Coalition.
The 'rides' will take place at a variety of venues throughout Britain and will be organised by Individuals, Professional trainers, Riding Clubs, Breed Societies, Riding Schools and Livery yards etc.
The first ride will start on the 8th July 2005 in Norfolk and will end at a special venue somewhere in Britain on the 8th July 2006!
We hope that hundreds if not thousands of Horses and their Riders will take part, with each rider riding for a minimum of time, as stated by the organisers of their individual event (this could be from a minimum of half an hour for the fun and pleasure riders right up to 3 - 5 hours for the endurance and professional riders) all rides will take place during a single 24 hour period.
The distance ridden by all the participators in the 'Ride for Life' will be added up after each event by the event organisers. The organisers will then supply the total mileage covered by the riders at their event to the GHDT. The GHDT will keep a running total of the miles ridden throughout Britain and will announce to the press, public and organisers when a total journey distance from London to Banjul has been reached.
The GHDT supports working equines in the Gambia and their families... it is the ONLY UK charity to workpermanently in the Gambia, all day, every day. GHDT anticipates that they will need to provide an established base in the Gambia for many decades to come... Supporting, Educating and Advising Owners, Outside Agencies and Government departments about the welfare of the Nations equines..
Its very simple, working animals - enable owners to obtain higher farming yields - which enables the owner to transport (by equine) his excess goods to market - which enables him to sell his produce - the money earned pays for better food for his family and his working animals, but most importantly it allows him to pay for health care for his family and education for his children. It is the circle of prosperity.
Please help us to raise awareness of the plight of all of those people and their animals that are affected by poverty in Africa.
A child dies every 3 seconds because of poverty in the world today...
We want that to end.
This Your Opportunity to support The Ride For Life...
All monies raised in this event will go to the people and animals that need it, today in Africa.

Thank you for taking part in Norfolk Natural Horse Groups, historic 24 hour, non-stop, relay ride - The 'Ride for Life'
The distance that you cover on your ride at Running Free Farm, Norfolk, will be recorded by the Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust and added towards the total miles ridden throughout the UK over the coming months. The total recorded distance ridden by the UK's riders will represent the journey from London to Banjul in the Gambia - 2,738 miles! - The Long Ride to Africa.
Sponsored rides like NNHG's will be taking place all over the UK during 2005 and 2006 with hundreds if not thousands of people being able to take part in supporting the work of The Gambia Horse and Donkey Trust. The rides will also help to raise public awareness of the plight of the working equines in the Gambia.
The Gambia Horse and Donkey trust is a small charity administered by volunteers, it operates with very minimal overheads. All of the money raised goes directly to the animals in the Gambia.
The Trust works very hard in the Gambia supporting the working equines and their owners, with sustainable initiatives, including Education, Training, Husbandry Support and Welfare programmes.
Importantly UK riders will be able to draw attention to the important global campaign,
MAKE POVERTY HISTORY.
Because... The Working Horses, Donkey's and Mules of the third world, suffer terrible working conditions, injury, pain and starvation in order to help their owners. These animals are in the front line fight against poverty all over Africa. They underpin fragile agricultural and transportation systems and literally make the difference between poverty and death or Prosperity and Life...
Every 3 seconds a child dies of poverty somewhere in the world...
That is why we are hosting
