3rd-5th Grade Group Lessons

Adapted from “I didn’t know I was a bully!”

Lesson 1

Personal Social Domain Standard A:

Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Objectives: Students will:

·  Understand and identify bullying behaviors

Materials:

Copies of the pages “I didn’t know I was a bully.” (pages 11-32)

Activity/procedure:

1.  Introduce lesson by saying, “today we are going to talk about bullying.” Ask for volunteers to read a page from “I didn’t know I was a bully.” Students will read their pages in order as you call out the page numbers.

2.  Ask students to raise their hands if they are a bully. Emphasize the fact that bullying is a bigger problem than most of us realize.

3.  Ask students the question, “what makes a person a bully?” Write answers on overhead

4.  Summarize by telling students that sometimes our actions make us

bullies and we don’t even realize it.

Lesson 2

Personal Social Domain Standard A: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Objectives: Students will:

·  Understand how excluding others is bullying behavior

·  Understand how others feel when we exclude them

·  Learn to change our bullying behavior

Materials:

1.  Bullying behavior list from previous lesson (the list the students came up with)

2.  Copy of “Choosing sides.” (page 44)

Activity/Procedure:

1.  Ask students to review the previous lesson.

2.  Go over bullying behavior list from previous lesson. Emphasize that once we identify and understand the behavior we can work to change it.

3.  Tell students that in today’s lesson we are going to concentrate on the bullying behavior of “excluding.”

4.  Ask students to define the word “excluding.”

5.  Give formal definition. Excluding- leaving others out on purpose in order to show power over them.

6.  Read the story, “Choosing sides.” (page 44)

7.  Ask the following questions:

Content questions:

1.  How would Corey describe himself at the beginning of the story?

2.  How would Corey describe himself at the end of the story? What caused him to change?

3.  What do you think Corey will do differently?

Process questions:

1.  Describe a time when you were excluded from a group. How did you feel?

2.  Describe a time you excluded someone from a group. Describe how you think that person felt.

Lesson 3

Personal/Social Domain Standard A:

Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Objectives: Students will:

·  Understand how friends can bully one another

·  Learn why “friendship power” must be equal

Materials:

1.  Bullying behavior list from previous lesson

2.  Copy of “Friendship fears.” (pages 51-52)

Procedure/Activity

1.  Review last 2 previous sessions by asking students to give examples of bullying behaviors.

2.  Introduce lesson by telling students that today we are going to talk about friendship bullies.

3.  Ask students how they think friends can bully each other. Some examples are:

a.  Name callings

b.  Saying, “I’m not going to be your friend if…”

c.  Bossing each other around

d.  Teasing and laughing at each other

e.  Pouting and crying when you don’t get your way.

4.  Emphasize to students that we often bully our friends and don’t even realize it.

5.  Read story “Friendship fears.” (pages 51-52)

6.  Ask the following questions:

Content questions:

1.What bullying behaviors were described in the story?

2.How could these behaviors change a friendship?

3.What could Jessica do to deal with this friendship bullying?

Process questions:

1.Have you ever bullied a friend? If so, do you think that your friend was afraid to tell you or did they tell you? Explain.

7.  Summarize by telling students friendships are not always easy. Also, friends should have equal power in the relationship.

Lesson 4

Personal/Social Domain Standard A: Students will acquire the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others.

Objectives: Students will:

·  Be able to apply the different types of bullying and bullying behaviors in order to play “Bully Bingo.”

Materials:

1. Bully Bingo Cards/Checklist

2. Bingo Chips

Procedure/Activity

1. Tell students that today we are going to review everything they learned in these last 3 weeks by playing Bully Bingo.

2. Play Bully Bingo (can give out prizes if you wish).
