  1. Free Computer Program for Youth in Grades 6th – 12th

The Health and Human Services Commission is in partnership with the non-profit organization, Computers for Learning (CFL) which offers FREE computers to children in grades 6th through 12th.A child'sschool must contact the program via the website below to find out how to participate. There is no income limitation.

Computers for Learning’s Mission Statement is:

Computers for Learning partners with schools to identify students in need of a home computer. We support students regardless of race or household income. If a student can be more successful in their academic endeavors with a computer in their home one is provided to them. However, the students served are typically minorities living at or below the poverty line. Although our primary focus is on supporting students, we also support schools, teachers and other nonprofit organizations.

Students who participate in our program receive:

  • A free desktop computer with at least a Pentium IV processor that is theirs to keep
  • Basic Microsoft Office software
  • Anti-virus software
  • Free technical support and computer maintenance until the student graduates from high school
  • Internet safety training
  • Free dial-up Internet access (service area permitting), courtesy our partner Grande Communications

In the future, CFL would like to offer:

  • Technology-based service-learning projects

  1. MORE AND MORE SCHOLARSHIPS

AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDENTS ARE NOT APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS:

Even if you do not have a college-aged child at home, please share this with someone who does, and to anyone and everyone that comes to mind. Though there are a number of companies and organizations that have donated money for scholarships to African-Americans , a great deal of the money is being returned because of a lack of interest or awareness. No one is going to knock on our doors and ask if we can use a scholarship. Take the initiative to get your children involved. Money shouldn't be returned to donating companies because we fail to apply for it. Please pass this information on to family members, nieces, nephews, friends with children etc. We must get the word out that money is available. If you are a college student or getting ready to become one, you probably already know how useful additional money can be.
