Integrated Math 2 Syllabus 2011-2012

Course Description:

Integrated Mathematics 2 continues students’ study of topics from algebra, geometry, and statistics in a problem-centered, connected approach. Functions, matrix operations, and algebraic representations of geometric concepts are the principle topics of study. Students will be expected to describe and translate among graphic, algebraic, numeric, tabular, and verbal representations of relationships and use those representations to solve problems. Appropriate technology, from manipulatives to calculators and application software, should be used regularly for instruction and assessment.

Course Goals:

(1)The learner will perform operations with numbers, algebraic expressions, and matrices to solve problems.

(2)The learner will describe geometric figures in the coordinate plane algebraically.

(3)The learner will collect, organize, and interpret data to solve problems.

(4)The learner will use relations and functions to solve problems.

EXPECTATIONS/PROCEDURES:

First, it is imperative that you have the required materials each day for taking notes in addition to your assigned textbook. There is a material list at the bottom of this page. Students will have a daily homework assignment. Homework will be checked the following day at the beginning of each period. Daily homework grades are based on effort and completion at the teacher’s discretion.

Secondly, it will be your responsibility to make up work and class notes. You will be given a chance to turn in missed work within three days of your return to school. You are allowed a maximum of 5 absences per semester. Therefore, it is important that you are in class each day. As a member of Tornado Academy, you must show a proficient level of understanding of the content on all major class assessments, such as unit tests. If you earn a 69 or less on your major class assessments, you will receive an INCOMPLETE for the assignment. You are then allowed to complete an alternate assignment or may make corrections to the assignment depending on the particular assessment to receive a 70 on the assignment. If you have ANY incompletes at the end of the nine week grading period, you will receive an F for your final grade in my class.

Throughout the mathematics department, students are required to keep an organized, sequential notebook throughout the semester. I recommend buying a 1.5 or 2 inch notebook. Students will be required to keep a notebook in ALL of their math classes at Fairmont High School; therefore, a designated “math” notebook is a good investment. One inch notebooks are not large enough to keep notes, worksheets, and other assignments for an entire semester. Notebook checks will be given twice each 9-week grading period and will count as a quiz grade. In addition to purchasing a notebook, I highly recommend purchasing a TI-84 graphing calculator. Students will need these calculators in all of their math classes at FHS as well as college classes. Calculators will be provided to use in class however, they will not be able to take calculators home. .

Most importantly, you will be expected to demonstrate an understanding of the course goals and underlying objectives listed above. Students will be evaluated on the assignments given during the semester using the grading criteria and grading standards listed below. You will need to complete all the assignments to be successful. In addition to assignments provided by the teacher, you will be given a North CarolinaEnd-Of-Course test to determine your level of ability. The EOC will be calculated as your final exam grade which is 25% of the final course grade.

Extra help will be available after school on Tuesday and Thursday in addition to the tutoring/reading period available at the end of third period. If you wish to attend tutoring after school you must be present no later than 10 minutes after the bell sounds ending fourth period.
