Feed My Starving Children. Jerry W. updated us – the date this year will be Thursday, Nov 10. 4 pm to 6 (10 spots), and 7 pm – 9 pm (30 spots). Jerry has committed us to those times. Spaces will be saved for Circle-K as well.
Oak Crest Arts and Crafts fest this Saturday.
Peanuts!Sept 23 is the big day. Box sales forms are available (and have been emailed out to the membership)– let’s all go out and sell a box or two or ten. Peanuts, pretzels, trail mix – it’s all good! Sign ups are happening.
The Kiwanis Show. It will be next April. Ralph is having some issues with his back and legs, so hasn’t been around, but there will be a committee meeting at 11:00 Wednesday October 12 at Faranda’s, immediately preceding our regular meeting. Sign-ups will begin soon. Sounds like it’s something of which you’ll definitely want to be a part!
An oldie but goodie: The club votedto shift our regular meetings from the Terrace Room to Faranda’s, starting in October. (Board meetings still to be at Lincoln Inn.)

PROGRAM
Kurt Thurmeier and Fr. Leo Kazeri, talking about the From Bricks to Books program, spoke to us today. They represent an organization called Tanzania Development Support, tdsnfp.org. Their mission is to improve the life of youth, especially girls, by supporting primary and secondary school improvements and other community identified priorities. Their work is in the Mara region located in the northwestern part of Tanzania.Kurt and Father Kazeri became friends in graduate school in the 80’s and after a visit to Tanzania with his wife to visit Leo, they became interested in how they could work together to better the situation for that small part of the world. Kurt is, among other things, a Founding Director of the School of Public and Global Affairs at Northern. They came back in 2009 and began raising $150,000 to fund a new girl’s dormitory for the local school. Since that time they have started to work on funding a library and resource center for the community. Interestingly, the community needs books on hand or once a person has learned to read, if they don’t have book to continue reading they lose the skill in about two years. Also, and maybe more importantly, the library has a computer area that teachers can use to become better at their job. They obtain many of their teaching materials over the internet as books are hard to come by there. The library is also a community center where many community activities can be held, thus becoming a focus of the community and a place to gather for various functions and learning. In all it was a wonderful program and very educational for all involved.
