Role purpose
· To implement strategic communications plans, working with the internal communications team and 3rd party providers.
· Manage the communication and engagement workstream of specific project plans on a day to day basis.
· Engage with key stakeholders to ensure key messages relating to specific projects are clearly communicated and issues identified and managed.
· To deputise for the Head of Parliamentary and Stakeholder Relations as necessary and represent the NMC at external events and stakeholder meetings.
Key accountabilities
· Support the delivery of specific project plans and work to ensure that engagement and communication elements of the project plans are delivered.
· Implementing the communication and engagement objectives, future plans, and current progress against plans through agreed communication channels.
· Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders and new stakeholder contacts.
· Deliver high quality briefing material and presentations to senior management for use in stakeholder interactions.
· Oversee the production of a range of communication products, working with third party providers to ensure high quality, accurate products that fit the brief.
· Represent the NMC with stakeholders, and at external events.
· Feed intelligence gathered through external engagement to fine tuning of policies, standards and guidance.
· Raise the profile and understanding of specific projects and their implication within the organisation.
· Chair internal working group(s) where required.
Standard responsibilities
People management
· As an ambassador for change, provide inspiring and motivational leadership that role models the NMC’s values and behaviours, and create an environment that empowers and enables staff to deliver excellence.
· Manage staff in accordance with the NMC’s human resource policies and procedures, including recruitment and selection, performance management that includes performance development reviews, personal development planning and dealing with sickness absence, disciplinary issues and appeals.
· Identify and develop professionals within own area to support the development of the organisational talent.
· Provide strong leadership and direction and keep performance improvement under review and ensure that performance targets are met.
· Facilitate and support the teams to enable them to achieve the department or directorate’s objectives.
· Provide consistent performance management by providing regular feedback, conducting formal reviews, and identifying and addressing business-focussed training and development needs.
· Manage issues relating to conduct and capability, ensuring that such issues are dealt with in a focussed and timely manner.
Other responsibilities

Qualifications and experience
· Educated to degree level, or equivalent.
· Experience of working at a senior level in a high profile and complex environment
· A proven track record of developing, implementing and delivering communication plans and delivering engagement activities.
· Experience of working in the health sector (desirable)
· A proven track record of managing external stakeholders, understanding and responding to different perspectives. .
Knowledge, skills and abilities
· Ability to think critically and draw sound conclusions based on complex data.
· Evidence of strong decision making and problem solving skills
· Excellent people skills and proven ability to motivate, develop and hold to account large and diverse teams.
· Ability to work effectively as a collaborative and supportive team member.
· Ability to build a stakeholder network and strong relationships with a range of stakeholders.

· A strategic thinker with experience of working within the sector on strategic initiatives
· Politically astute and strong engagement and influencing skills
· Resilient, able to remain calm in challenging situations
· Excellent oral and written communication skills including ability to communicate concepts and developments to a range of audiences in a succinct manner
