Pre-Calculus (Honors) Syllabus
Materials:
3 ring binder
Pencils
Loose-leaf paper
Calculator (recommended but not required)
CLASS POLICIES:
Attendance:
To achieve success in Mathematics, it is important for you to attend class regularly. Many students have great difficulty trying to learn math work on their own after an absence. Classwork tends to build up on prior learning. If a student misses just one day, they have difficulty following new assignments. When you are absent, check the website and the absent notebook for your assignments. Failure to make up work (within the designated time restraints) will result in a grade deduction for that assignment. These quarter deadlines are: Q3- 3/4, 3/18: Q4- 5/13, 6/3.
An absence of one class period will not excuse a student from turning in previously assigned work on the day they return to class.
Grading:
Third Nine Weeks Fourth Nine Weeks
Tests/Projects 60% Tests/Projects60%
Quizzes 30% Quizzes 30%
Daily HW/CW10%Daily HW/CW10%
Final Exam counts as 20% of your Final Grade!
Homework:
Homework will be checked daily for completion. Each homework assignment is worth 10 points. I will group 10 assignments together (homework packets) creating a possible 100 points for the daily homework grade. In a nine weeks period, you will have 2-3 homework packets. You will receive credit if all problems are written, numbered, attempted, and all necessary work is shown. 5 points are taken off if only half of your work is completed. If you do not have your homework, no points are awarded. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to show me the assignment.
Quizzes:
Quizzes are to be expected every week. Quizzes may or may not be announced. If you are absent on the day of a quiz you will not be able to make it up. However, it will not count against you. As your extra credit, I will drop your lowest quiz grade at the end of each nine weeks period. There is no other extra credit given!!
Tests:
Tests will always be announced. If you are absent the day before a test, you must still take the test with your class. If you are absent the day of a test, you have ONE WEEK to make up the test with NO DEDUCTIONS. If you wait until the quarter deadlines to makeup a test, then you will have a deduction up to 30 points taken off of your test grade and may not have sufficient time to complete test corrections. These quarter deadlines are: Q3- 3/4, 3/18: Q4- 5/13, 6/3.
There are no exceptions to this rule. Test corrections- each student is allowed to make test corrections to gain 1/3 of the points back, however, written explanations must accompany each missed question. Directions for test corrections are posted in my classroom and must be completed within two weeks after the test was given.
Weekly Overviews:
You will be given a Weekly Overview sheet every week that will count as a quiz grade. Weekly Overviews will consist of a SAT Word of the week, Quote of the week, daily warm ups, discussion questions, and/or math journals. As long as you do what is expected of you, you will receive a quiz grade of 100. This is designed to help you stay on top of your class work, as well as to reward you for your participation. However, if you fail to turn them in at the end of the week, it will count as a zero for a quiz grade. If you are absent a day, it is your responsibility to get the information from a classmate.
Tutoring:
Tutoring is recommended for students with averages below 70%. Enrichment andremediation times are built into the school day to allow for more flexibility. If you have any additional questions or feel that you are getting behind, I will be available every morning before school and after school on Tuesdays from 2:30-3:30pm. Please make sure that you have transportation if you are staying after school. Remember- it is your grade and only you can pull it up or bring it down!
Teacher Website/ Remind 101:
There are several ways to keep in contact with me. I will use the class website to post the syllabus and other important documents. This will be helpful for useful tips, updates, and resources for class. On this website you will find instructions on how you can subscribe to Remind. The class website is jmullenrhs.pbworks.com.
Progress Reports:
Monitoring your progress throughout the semester will be vital to your success. The scheduled dates (mandated by the county) are the following: 3rd Quarter Reports will be given out between 2/22-2/26/2016 and the 4th Quarter Reports will be given out between 5/2-5/6/2016. Be sure to check PowerSchool regularly for up to date information.
