Betonica Herbal Apprenticeship would like to add guest lecturers to their medical herbalist training programme. The ideal candidate will be qualified to diploma/degree level in herbal medicine and ideally be in private practice with additional teaching qualifications and/or experience.

Main conditions of employment

Hours: 7 hours of teaching per seminar day, weekends September to April and some week days during the Summer school (June). The number of days will depend on the subject taught, please see course outlines for further details.

Location: Within 20 miles of Wellington, Somerset. A variety of locations will be used.

Rate: £200 per day(7 hours teaching, preparation and marking where appropriate)

Expenses:£50 per day (of teaching) towards travel/accommodation costs

Contract: Employed as a temporary self employed guest lecturer, responsible for your own tax, national insurance and pension contributions. The position is dependent on the course continuing with enough revenue to cover guest lecturers. There will be a three month probationary period.

Reporting: The guest lecturer will liaise with the apprenticeship leaders.

Notice: If you decide to terminate your temporary contract, you will need to give written notice of three months (this is to allow time for a replacement to be found without disrupting the flow of the course).

If your temporary position is terminated by Betonica we will give as much notice as we can, but at least one month’s notice.

Holidays: Not applicable due to the nature of the temporary contract and number of days taught.

Sick leave: Not applicable due to the nature of the temporary contract and self employment.

Job Title: Temporary guest lecturer in Western Herbal Medicine

Reports to: Apprenticeship leaders

General overview:

The Betonica Herbal Apprenticeship aims to bring together diverse herbalist teachers, a new and improved syllabus and course structure, and the key principles of sustainability and community health and education. Training fully qualified medical herbalists using a four year programme, who can thrive in a self employed environment.

Main purpose of the job:

To lecture on the Betonica Herbal Apprenticeship programme, teaching future medical herbalists.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. To teach at an undergraduate level (and a level relevant to the particular class).
  2. To assist in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.
  3. To participate in meetings between guest lecturers and apprenticeship leaders.
  4. To provide appropriate support to students.
  5. To maintain own continuing personal development.
  6. To actively follow current health and safety, diversity and equal opportunities legislation.
  7. To submit marked student work for external assessment

About the Betonica Herbal Apprenticeship

The Betonica herbal apprenticeship programme is the first of its kind in the UK. The course is a blend of modern science and traditional knowledge, going back to the age old form of herbalist training; apprenticeship.

The programme combines the key aspects of the European Herbal & Traditional Medicine Practitioners Association (EHTPA) syllabus with additional skills and knowledge; in particular community clinics and education, organic growing and field to dispensary medicine.

This four year apprenticeship programme (on completion of the final clinical exam), will allow apprentices to practice as a medical herbalist with full insurance and the ability to join a professional association (if they so wish).

Main aim

To create an alternative learning experience in herbal medicine, combining community, sustainability and organic principles.

Assessment

The Betonica apprenticeship uses a variety of assessment methods, and takes some of its structure from NVQ level 5 (undergraduate equivalent) City and Guilds style apprenticeship. This includes a portfolio showing skills learnt and progression of learning as well as assignments, coursework, exams, observed practical’s and clinical assessments, case studies, a research project, viva voce and final clinical exam.

Accreditation

The course is not currently accredited but we may seek accreditation in the future.

Verification

The course is internally verified by a medical herbalist who is a qualified teacher and an assessor of NVQ level 5 in pharmacy, and a level 5 NVQ assessor in Health and Social care.

The course is externally verified by an independent panel of medical herbalists who are previous herbal medicine course leaders and teachers.

Administration

The course leader is Laura Carpenter, who gained a BSc (Hons) in Herbal Medicine from the University of East London and is a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists(NIMH).

In 2013 NIMH awarded her the Dorothy Carroll Award for top final clinical examination.

Laura went on to become a member of the Post Graduate Training board for NIMH, ensuring continuing professional standards were met, for over two years. During that time she also became editor of Herbal Thymes magazine.

Laura then became the director for communication for NIMH in January 2015, taking a temporary seat on the NIMH council until September 2015.

She then set up Tilia Magazine, a professional magazine for herbalists in the UK and Ireland, in December 2015, and is the chief editor.

Prior to becoming a herbalist Laura worked in the learning and development field in the Public sector for 10 years, and developed an award winning national training programme.

As well as training in coaching, development and management, Laura also has a Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF).
