RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

Burton Borough is a SpecialistArtsCollege which seeks continuous improvement. We have:-

  • A high level of performance at GCSE which has shown a consistent improvement in recent years. Last year (2011) 78% of students achieved 5+ A* - C grades, which was our highest ever result. Our 5+ A* - C (including English & Maths) was 60%. Our 5+ A* - C (including English & Maths) trend over the last 9 years is 41, 42, 42, 44, 43, 50, 53, 59, 60. We are currently predicting 65% (approx) in 2012.
  • Been an ArtsCollege since September 2004. This has been greatly beneficial to us across the entire curriculum. Our nationally famous school bands are the jewel in the crown. Despite budget cuts, we continue to provide additional funding for this area.
  • Been oversubscribed for many years. In September 2011 we continued to be oversubscribed and had an intake of approx 216 which includes 40+ from out of catchment. We are again oversubscribed for September 2012.
  • An excellent reputation in the local community, particularly for the high standard of students’ behaviour that we insist on.
  • There has been a very significant expansion of our support staff since 2007 with approximately a 40% increase in numbers. We have, however, managed our budget very carefully, so that we continue to have a small surplus. This is enabling us to cope reasonably well with the budget cuts faced by all schools.
  • Achieved an OFSTED report (March 2010) which was a major improvement on 2007. We are now described as ‘satisfactory with good features’. However with our further improvement in 2012 exam results we anticipate a ‘Good’ outcome in our next inspection this year (2013)
  • An opportunity to develop our buildings through a £10m BSF building project, which will include provision for Post 16 on our site. A major upgrade in ICT facilities is part of this programme.

WHERE ARE WE GOING?

In September 2009 we launched the first phase of a major development programme with the umbrella title of “System Redesign”. This breaks down into four major interlinked themes.

  1. Developing Teaching & Learning
  • In September 2009 we launched our own, school designed model for learning. Fully implementing this will take several years. It is already widely used throughout the school, and underpins the improvements in teaching/learning.
  • Our current priority is to improve feedback to students, and to address the relative underachievement of boys who are in the majority (55%) in the school.
  1. Developing a Pastoral System fit for the 21st Century
  • We moved to vertical tutor groups in September 2010 which are based around a House System. The last two years have been very successful.
  • Our current priority is to use the data we now possess to be even more proactive in addressing the emerging issues.
  1. Involve all Partners through the development of “Burton Borough Voices”
  • We are proactively seeking to involve all students in all aspects of school life – including teaching & learning. This is now a major part of the way we do things at Burton Borough.
  • Our current priority is to provide ever more opportunities for our supportive parents to help their children and our students raise their aspirations and standards of performance.(With particular focus on boys)
  1. Adopting a “Stage not Age” approach to Professional Development
  • To continue to expand the extensive CPD opportunities available to all at Burton Borough, whatever the stage in their career. CDP is the very lifeblood of work at Burton Borough.
  • Our current priority is to use the “coaching model” to develop the quality of teaching which is now central to our CPD at Burton Borough.
