Algebra 2 Course Outline
Algebra 2, a CSU and UC requirement and a large part of the SAT’s, can be very challenging for many students. For some students, homework alone will not be enough to understand and learn the concepts covered in class, extra practice will be necessary. It will be up to the student, with your support, to spend as much time as necessary to learn the concepts covered in class. I will keep you posted on your child’s effort during class via a weekly assignment log. In this log there is also a place for your child to communicate with me as to their effort at home by grading him/herself on a scale of 0 to 5. It is extremely important that students evaluate their own performance and reflect on their learning in order to be successful in this class and in future math classes.
The first half of Algebra 2 may look familiar to some students, if so, this is a good time to sharpen these skills to a nearly automatic state, much like the multiplication tables. For others, the challenge may seem overwhelming, but persistence and knowing when to ask for help from others will prove to be invaluable assets
The second half of Algebra 2 will introduce new concepts not seen before in Algebra 1. Here we will explore the conic sections, complex number system, and combinations and permutations, among other topics.
Math Department Grading Policy: Course grade will be calculated as follows:
80%(Test average) plus 20%(Homework average).
90% - 100%+ A
80% - 89% B
70% - 79%C
0% - 69%F
No make-up tests will be given. However, at the end of the term, the lowest test score will be dropped and replaced with the final exam score.
