The Trustees of the Tutu Foundation UK are seeking to appoint a permanent full time Director to commence July 2010 or as soon thereafter as possible.
The successful candidate will have direct experience of senior
management and preferably voluntary or third sector experience.
The Tutu Foundation UK was launched in June 2007. Since then a small staff team has been recruited with funding from ‘Capacitybuilders’ and several Trusts.
It has developed its first major programme of capacity building for front line community organisations in the UK working with disaffected young people. The programme is called Conversations for Change.
The Foundation has developed several significant partnerships, including one with the British Council which has seconded a member of staff to the Foundation until June 2010.
The Foundation also has a close partnership with the Prince’s
Trust.
The Foundation is seeking a Director to work with the Board and staff team to consolidate and develop robust internal systems and infrastructure, take a leading role in fund raising,
oversee compliance and reporting and prepare the Foundation for the development and growth.
Title: Director of the Tutu Foundation UK
Terms: 5 days per week, Salary £45,000.
Pension contributions: a group pension scheme is in the process of being established to conform to current changes in regulations.
Holiday entitlement: 30 working days p.a. plus Bank and Statutory Holidays.
Probationary period 6 months during which the contract may be terminated either way with one month’s notice.
Thereafter, notice of termination three months either way.
Responsible to: The Chairman and the Board of Trustees
To oversee the Foundation as an effective, sustainable and accountable organisation, including taking a leading role in raising funds for the Foundation.
To provide overall strategic leadership for the Foundation and accountability to the Board of Trustees and key stakeholders in accordance with the principles and policies of the Board.
To provide day to day management of the Foundation.
Specific duties:
To be responsible for ensuring that the Foundation’s strategic mission and purpose as determined by the Trustees is clearly defined and articulated, and followed by staff and volunteers.
To provide overall strategic leadership for the Foundation with a view to growth in programmes and activities.
To consult the Board of Trustees to develop positive working relationships and ensure appropriate decisions and guidance is provided by the Board.
To support the staff team and to ensure that understanding of key operational and strategic issues is nurtured to maximise confidence.
To work with the Chairman of the Board to prepare papers for Trustees’ meeting agendas and briefing papers as required and attend Trustees’ meetings providing timely reports including
management accounts, budgets and operational reports.
To provide day to day management of the Foundation maintaining daily contact and transparent working relationships with all staff.
To ensure that the operational plans of the Foundation meet corporate objectives and fulfil the mission and purpose of the Foundation.
To oversee the development of the Foundation as an effective, sustainable and accountable organisation.
To ensure a coherent fund raising strategy is developed for all major donor constituencies, play a lead role in raising funds.
To ensure regular reporting is compliant with all donor requests and that all monitoring reports are provided to funders on time.
To champion the innovative, creative and academically robust ethos of the Foundation internally and with key strategic allies and partners.
To establish a clear management structure appropriate to the size and functions of the Foundation, with personal objectives and clear performance indicators in place for each member of staff, to establish a transparent system of appraisal review.
To supervise staff ensuring the effective and appropriate internal audit system embedded in the Foundation’s procedures and practices functions to enable scrutiny and transparency in procedures, financial accountability and work plans.
To work with the Trustees and Auditor to ensure that a sustainable financial strategy for the development of the Foundation is in place.
To ensure that returns to Charity Commission and Companies’ House are filed on time.
Person Specification
Director Experience
1. Executive experience of a senior appointment.
2. Provision of strategic leadership to a staff team and a Board of Trustees.
3. Networking and partnership working with senior managers of peer level organisations, collaborators and donors.
4. Setting up and implementing the systems necessary to enable a small emergent organisation to become a robust, effective and sustainable voluntary sector organisation capable of growth.
5. Programme development and delivery.
6. A proven track record of securing core and programme funding.
7. Evidence of establishing potential or actual organisational growth.
Skills:
1. Proven strategic leadership skills.
2. Track record of financial, people and business management of a third sector organisation in the UK.
3. A record of establishment of organisational systems to ensure robust accountability and sustainable growth.
4. A record of establishment of organisational systems to ensure objective monitoring and recoding of results and effect of programmes.
5. Demonstrable skills in partnership working at a senior level with relevant organisations.
6. The ability to prioritise a busy workload in limited time.
7. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
8. Excellent negotiating and influencing skills.
9. A self-starter.
