6) Title of the Topic:
“A PHARMACEUTICO- ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF RASAPARPATI ON PANDU w.s.r.TO ITS HEAMATINIC ACTIVITY”
6) Brief resume of the intended work
6.1 Need for the study:
Rasashastra is a branch of Ayurveda, which dealswith the metals, minerals, precious stones and their processing. Parada is considered as the supreme among all metals and minerals. Among the different processes of Parada, Moorchana is a process by which Parada attain “Vyadhi nashaka” property1. Rasaparpati is saagni, sagandha moorchitha parada kalpana, mainly indicated in diseases like Grahani, Atisara, Arshas, Kamala, Pandu2.According to Ayurveda, Panduis a disease associated with Rakthalpatha3 and Pandutha of body4. Pandu roga has similarity with that of Anaemia in all respects such as etiological factors , signs symptoms andtherapeutics.
Anemia which means reduction in red blood cell count ,haemoglobin content and packed cell volume. It denotes shortage of rich blood cells and coloring matter called hemoglobin5.
The agents required in the formation of blood and used for the treatment of Anemia’s are called haematinics.
A standard operative procedure along with, statistical analysis and scientific data of the raw material to the finished product is necessary for the safe and efficacious use of the drug.
So considering the above factors the study is planned in order to evaluate the haematenic actionof Rasaparpati by pharmaceutico analytical and experimental study.
6.2 Review of Literature:
1. Moorchana is a process by which Parada attain “Vyadhi nashaka” property, is mentioned in
Rasa Tarangini.1
2. Preparation of Rasaparpati and its indication is mentioned in Rasa Tarangini.2
3. Pandu is a disease associated with, raktalpatha is mentioned in Charaka Samhitha and
pandutha of the body is mentioned in Sushrutha Samhitha.3,4
4. Anemia means reduction in red blood cells is mentioned in Robbins Pathologic Basis of
Disease.5
6.3 Previous work done:
1. Dr.Srivastav K.K. (1983), Lucknow State Ayurvedic College,University Of Lucknow,has
worked on the topic “ Pharmaceutical and physico chemical studies of Rasaparpati and
prayogika adyayana .”6
2. Dr.Shrivaastava U.K.(1997), Chitrakoot Post Graduate Institute of Ayurveda Mahatmagandi
University, Chitrakoot , Stana(M.P) ,has worked on the topic “Studies on mercurial
preparation – Rasaparpati w.s.r. to trivida paka .”6
3. Dr.Reddy V.B. (2001), Bellary Tharanath Govt. Ayurvedic Medical College , Rajiv Gandhi
University of Health Sciences Bangalore, has worked on the topic “A study on pharmaco
analytical and therapeutic efficacy of Rasaparpati w.s.r to samanya and vardhamana prayoga
in grahani(amoebic dysentry).”6
4. Dr.Mashru Mona.S. (2001), Jamnagar Institute For Post Graduate Teaching and Reasearch in
Ayurveda. Gujarat Ayurveda University, Jamnagar, has worked on the topic “A comparative
pharmaco clinical study of Rasaparpati prepared from Ashta samskaritha and samanya
shoditha parada.”6
5.Dr.Gokhale S.S. (2001), Pune Thilak Ayurveda Mahavidyalaya, Pune University, has worked
on the topic “ Preparation of Rasaparpati and assessment of anti microbial activity in the
patient of Grahani in – vitro.”6
6.4) Objectives of study:
A) To do comprehensive literary review Rasaparpati and Pandu.
B) To prepare Rasaparpati as explained in Rasatarangini.
C) To do physico-chemical analysis of Rasaparpati.
D) To evaluate the haematinic activity of Rasaparpati in Pandu.
7) Materials and Methods:
7.1 Source of data:
A) Literary Study –Information will be collected from Ayurvedic classical text books, modern
text books & relevant research literatures.
B)Pharmaceutical study-
1)Raw drugs will be collected from S.D.M. Ayurvedic Pharmacy, Udupi.
2) Preparation of Rasaparpati at S.D.M. Ayurvedic Pharmacy,Udupi.
C) Analytical Source: After the preparation, the sample will be subjected to
1) Organoleptic charecters
2) Physico chemical constants
3) Qualitative and Quantitative analysis
4) TLC
D) Experimental Study-
1) Albino Rats will be taken randomly from S.D,M.C.A. Udupi Animal house for the study and
grouped in to 4, each groupconsisting of 6 rats.
2) Haematinic effect of Rasaparpati will be studied on Albino Rats.
7.2 Method of collecting of data(including sampling procedures if any)
.Experimental Evaluation:
1) / Sample / 24 Albino Rats will be selected randomly2) / Inclusive criteria / 1) Healthy Albino Rats of either sex will be considered.
2) Weighing about 150-200 grams.
3) / Exclusive criteria / 1) Less than 150 grams more than 200 grams.
2) Diseased rats.
3) Rats which are under trial of other experiments
4) / Grouping / Each group having 6 Rats and will be kept in separate cages.Anaemia is induced to group 2,group 3 and group 4.
Group 1 - Control Group
Group 2 -Standard Group(with loha bhasma)
Group 3 – Test Group(without Rasaparpati)
Group 4 – Test Group(with Rasaparpati)
5) / Intervention / Rat dose will be calculated on the basis of human dose by using standard conversion method.
6) / Mode of administration / Oral
7) / Duration / 4 days
8) / Instrument used / Sahlis haemoglobin meter.
9) / Comparison / All groups are compared
10) / Assessment criteria / 1)Complete blood Count
2)Peripheral smear study
3)Reticulocyte count
11) / Statistical test / ANOVAand Unpaired ‘t’ test
7.3) Dose the study require any investigation or Intervention to be conducted on patients or
other humans or animals? If so please describe briefly.
Since this is an Experimental Study on Albino Rats, that are maintained on Standard
Laboratory, Foods and water, clinical study is not required.
7.4) Has ethical clearance been obtained from your Institution in case of 7.3?
YES, Concurrence has been obtained from the ethical committee of S.D.M.C. of
