11_RP (Article) Where can I find jobs on the Internet i) What you need to know

(CLB 4)

A: Employment CounselorB: Client, Job-seeker

A) Hi Linda, have you started looking for a job now that you’ve completed your resume?

B: Yes, I have. I’m using several websites that advertise jobs in the childcare field. I want to find a job as an Early Childhood Educator.

A: Yes, I’ve got ECE written down here in your file. What websites are you searching?

B: I look on Workopolis and the Ontario Job Bank every morning. I also created a job alert under my Job Account on the Ontario Job Bank. Today on Workopolis there were over 61 job postings for ECE and ECE assistants. I also created a career alert with Workopolis. They will now email me future jobs posted on their site.

A: That sounds great. Have you gone out on any interviews yet?

B: Yes, I have. I had 2 interviews last week.

A: Tell me, how did they go?

B: The interviewers spoke a little fast, but I think I answered all of the questions well.

A: Well, it takes practice, and it’s good you're gaining experience and confidence going to these job interviews.

ii) What you need to know: Cover Letters (CLB 4)

A: Hello Linda, how is your job-search going?

B: So-so. I’ve been looking on the internet and sending out my resume and I’ve only received 1 response.

A: Did you carefully read the employer’s instructions?

B: Yes, I think so. The problem with emailing your resume is you can’t follow up with a phone call or address or anything because you only have an email address and a posting that says to send your resume.

A: Have you been including a cover letter?

B: No, I haven’t. The postings don’t ask for them and it takes too long to write a letter for every job I apply for; it’s really too much of a problem. Then because English is not my first language, I would have to get it proofread each time before I send it.

A: Linda, I strongly suggest you start composing a cover letter for each job you apply for. It says to the employer that you are serious about finding a job and will make the extra effort to write a letter directly to the employer. In the cover letter, you have an opportunity to introduce yourself, highlight your skills and experience and try to get an interview. Let’s book an appointment next Thursday and I’ll help you write a cover letter. Please bring in a job posting you are going to apply for and we’ll use it to write your cover letter.

B: That’s great. I have a job that closes next Friday, so I’d like to come in Monday or Tuesday to work on my cover letter.

A: Let’s say Monday at 1 p.m. I’ve booked you for a 1 hour appointment.
