Civics and Economics
1. Find a current event in a newspaper or magazine that is related to the unit we are working on. Internet is acceptable if that source (ex. Time, NY Times, charlotte.com) are also available in print. Other sources that are not accessible in print are not acceptable and 10 points will be deducted from the total for such sources. Some examples are Yahoo!News, CNN etc.
2. The article must relate directly to our notes for that week. We may discuss varied other topics through the week such as how the economy is doing or the price of gas, however these are discussion topics and not necessarily related directly to our lessons for that week. If you are unable to find an article, come to me before Thursday and I will give you some ideas.
3. If the article was cut out of a newspaper or magazine, tape it to an 81/2 x 11 piece of paper – to prevent me from losing it. On the back or attached sheet write 2-3 paragraphs answering the following questions:
- Summarize the article in a couple of sentences. I should have a good idea of what the article is about and its important points without having to read it.
- Analyze how the article is related to what we are studying in our lessons/notes. It should be in depth with an explanation of the actual relationship of the article to your notes and an analysis of how the relationship works and an explanation of the topic. If your analysis is only 2-3 sentences it is probably not enough.
- What is your opinion of the article or subject? There should be 3 – 4 sentences analyzing and explaining your opinion about the article or the subject matter of the article.
4. We will be sharing these in class. They will count as a participation grade and an assignment grade both. The purpose of these is to help you relate the material to real life and enforce your understanding and comprehension.
