NATIONAL ARTS IN HEALTH
CONFERENCE AND SHOWCASE
Thursday 19 April 2018
EXPRESSION OF INTEREST FORM for
ARTS ORGANISATIONS working in HEALTH
Event overview
The Conference and Showcase is an Aesop collaboration with the College of Medicine and Guildhall School of Music & Drama.
The main target audience is health professionals. The aim is to inspire them about the power of the arts to improve the lives of patients and health professionals, and to galvanise and equip them to work with artists and arts organisations.
The day will showcaseabout 25 arts in health programmes. We have consulted the health sector about current priorities and, with their help, 5priority themes have been chosen:
- Reducing demands on the health system, for example:
Social prescribing
Reduce caseload and pressure on frontline health professionals
More resilient and empowered patients and communities
Achieving health savings
Greater emphasis on prevention
Health as a social movement
- Addressing the neglect of mental health
- Ageing population
- Addressing health inequalities
- Expressing the experience of ill health and of the health system
Health professionals who attend will receive a certificate saying the day contributes to their year’s allocation of 50 hours of education.
Showcase format and content
There is 30 minutes for each arts in health programme – time for it to be presented and discussed with the audience. It must include a beneficiary/patient perspective and cover the programme’s evidence base, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness.
Selection process
Selection will be made by Dr Michael Dixon (College of Medicine Chairman), Professor Helena Gaunt (Guildhall School of Music & Drama Vice Principal and Director of Guildhall Innovation) and Tim Joss (Aesop founder and Chief Executive).
The selection criteria are:
- Relevance to the five priority themes.
- Artistic quality.
- Potential for increased take-up by the health system.
Shortlisted programmes will be asked to provide two expert referees, one from the arts and the other from health.
Ongoing promotion of selected arts in health programmes
Aesop launched the Aesop Marketplace at the 2016 event. It is a website ( which operates like an online dating site, matching health decision-makers with relevant arts in health programmes in an attractive and time-efficient way. The site currently promotes the first showcase’s 24 programmes and will be updated for the April 2018 event. Additional opportunities for the 24 have included a recent Philanthropy Impact/Aesop arts in health seminar for philanthropists and wealth managers.
