‘Alan Shearer is boring. We call him Mary Poppins’

Freddie Shepherd, Newcastle Director, secrectly recorded by a News of the World reporter in 1998.

Despite scoring an incredible 365 goals in 692 games during an incredible career, Alan Shearer still had his critics, some of them with more credibility than Freddie Shepherd. Whether he was being called immobile or one-dimensional, the inference was clear - scoring goals isn’t enough for the modern day centre-forward. As Kris Boyd is finding out to his cost, we now expect our number nines to be all things to all men – to hold the ball up, link play, head the ball on, defend when necessary, create chances - oh, and put the ball in the back of the net if they have time. Just as well expectations were different when Ally MacCoist was making his way into the Ibrox record books. Talk of Super Ally, scourge of Celtic for many a year, leads us to our very own goal poacher (turned goal tender) – the man who calls himself ‘ The Carloway legend’ but who is known to his teammates simply as ‘Craigie’……
