KETTLE RUN HIGH SCHOOL BAND BOOSTERS ASSOCIATION
BOOSTER MEETING MINUTES
FEBRUARY 7, 2013
Members Present: Pat Whitney, Laurie Blankenship, Eva Edwards, Chuck Wilkers, Kirsten Georgi, Meredith Thompson, Sherry Garlem, Tonetta Matthews-Smith, Nicole Jones, Cathy Thompson, Holly Hartman, Stacey Morgn, Matt Yonkey, Merle Fallon, Kathy Fine, Leigh Darcy, Seana Ankers, Diane Searles.
The meeting was called to order at 7:04pm.
Mr. Yonkey began the meeting with an explanation of Assessment and announcement.
•Assessment is a State organized event, and is like a band SOL Test. Each District holds an Assessment, which is composed of two parts. For part one the bands perform before 3 judges and are rated on approximately 12 things. Sight reading is the next performance. Bands are allowed 7 minutes to review music from the judge, anything except playing an actual note, and then perform for a 4th judge. The scores are then put together for a final score. 1=superior, 5=poor. Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble both attend. This year it will be held March 2nd. Symphonic will be in the morning, around 10am, and Wind Ensemble will be in the afternoon, around 4pm. The exact times are still to be announced.
•Urgent Announcement: This year there was an assessment on the scheduling efficiency of the middle and high schools in the county, in order to improve SOL scores. The report made recommendations to make all middle scores have the same schedule regarding electives and band, and this involves changing the middle school music schedules to an AB schedule, reducing band time by 40%. This will also affect HS in that the students will not be arriving as skilled as they were. Nothing is finalized yet. Please go to the school board and let them know that you do not support this. Call, email, and/or attend the meeting. If you look at the SOL's for Cedar Lee you can see that the music students are much higher in math and reading scores, which supports NOT reducing the music program (increasing it likely would be more beneficial). Other schools who have done this have had it backfire. NAfME has a website with information on how to advocate for the music program based on who your audience is.

•Golf Outing 4/26/2013
•You will be getting an email with more information in the next few days. A flyer is on the website and Seana asks that everyone distribute that as much as possible. We have a committee that is working together to make this a success.
•Mr. Yonkey announced the "Major Drive": for $5 you can have Mr. Warner drive your first ball on the Par 5 hole.
•The Golf Club has gotten a tent to cover the deck in the event of rain.
•Spirit Nights
•Subway: Normally we receive around $100, Seana will get the actual number this week from the most recent spirit night.
•Tropical Smoothie: We have cancelled the remaining spirit nights at this location.
•Bertucci's: Watch for a spirit night here on February 25th or 27th. The date is being finalized.
•Nicole Jones would like dates for a spirit night at Sweet Frog in Warrenton. We would get 10% and would not need a flyer or card. Seana will look at the calendar and give Nicole some dates.
•Family Fun Night 2/23/13
•Diane passed around the flyer. It can also be found on the website.
•We currently have 12 kids registered, and most flyers have not gone home yet.
•Future Fundraisers/Ideas
•Little Caesar's Pizza Kits to replace Gianni's, to be held in December.
•Sheetz booklets were revamped, and we were waiting for that to settle out. We will consider it for next year.
•Chick-Fil-A has a calendar sale fundraiser, for November/December timeframe. Nicole Jones can look into that.
•Scrips Grocery cards
•The concern before was that we would have to purchase the cards in advance, and we didn't have the funds at the time.
•Virginia Diner peanuts.
•Golf Outing Tournament at the Mini Golf.
•The more people we have getting involved the more variety we can do. Our preference is fundraisers that don't require a lot of upfront expenses. Please bring any other ideas to the next meeting.
