RECENT NEW YORK WINNERS IN MTNASTATE, EASTERN DIVISION AND NATIONAL COMPETITIONS

Competitions are held each year in all of the member states of MTNA, winners of which then go on to Division level events. Final rounds were held at the National Conference of the MTNA, held earlier this year in Albuquerque, New Mexico. This past year’s state-level competitions were held at NazarethCollege in Rochester.New York is very proud of its students who have won these state, division and national prizes.

The Junior Division of the NYSMTA/MTNA competitions had four state winners this past October. The Composition winner was Sachin Shukla of Manlius. Winner of the piano event was Rachel Sohn, a student of Young Kim. The Piano Alternate was Patrick Chi, a student of Joseph Fennimore. The String representative was violinist Isabel Kingston, student of Brian Krinke.

The Senior Division of the NYSMTA/MTNA competitions had seven state winners. The piano winner was Jae Young Kim, student of Douglas Humpherys. The piano alternate was Haolin Lin, student of Victoria Mushkatkol. Piano honorable mention was given to Duo Xu, student of Tamari Gurevich. The string winner was violinist Rintaro Yano, student of Ann Setzer. The string alternate was violinist Haley Gillia, student of Brian Krinke. The woodwind winner was saxophonist Stephanie Venturino, student of Chien-Kwan Lin. The woodwind alternate was saxophonist Sam Meyer, student of Chien-Kwan Lin.

The Young Artist Division of the NYSMTA/MTNA competitions had six winners. The piano winner was Xi Chen, student of Douglas Humpherys. The piano alternate was Long Ma, student of Enrico Elisi. The Voice representative was Anthony Baron, student of Katherine Ciesinski. The woodwind winner was saxophonist Jonathan Wintringham, student of Chien-Kwan Lin. The woodwind alternate was saxophonist Katherine Weintraub, student of Chien-Kwan Lin.

There were four chamber music groups recognized in the NYSMTA/MTNA competitions this past October at NazarethCollege. The string representative was the ¡Voila! Viola Trio, comprised of Samantha Rodriguez, Benjamin Magruder and Alexander Pena, coached by Chien-Kwan Lin. Thewind winner was Project Fusion Saxophone Quartet, with members Daniel Espinosa, Matthew Evans, Michael Sawzin and Matthew Amedio, coached by Chien-Kwan Lin. The wind alternate was the A2 Saxophone Quarte, whose members are Sean Xue, Hyung-Ryoul Kim, Marta Tiesenga and Nick Exler. Their coach was Chien-Kwan Lin. The wind honorable mention was given to the Finja Saxophone Quartet, with members Kevin Zhao, Ainsley Kilgo, Tyler Wiessner and Daniel Stenziano. Their coach was Chien-Kwan Lin.

Winners of the state level competition went on to the Eastern Division this past January, held at HowardCommunity College in Columbia, Maryland. New YorkStatehad five winners here. The ¡Voila! Viola Trio, comprised of Samantha Rodriguez, Benjamin Magruder and Alexander Pena, and coached by Chien-Kwan Lin, were the winners of the string chamber music event. . Thewind chamber music winner was Project Fusion Saxophone Quartet, with members Daniel Espinosa, Matthew Evans, Michael Sawzin and Matthew Amedio, coached by Chien-Kwan Lin. Winners of the Eastern Division competition then went on to the National level competitions, held at the MTNA National Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico this past March. New YorkState is very proud to have had four winners in the National event. The national Young Artist Voice Winner was Anthony Baron, student of Katherine Ciesinski at the EastmanSchool. The National Young Artist Woodwind Winner was Jonathan Wintringham, student of Chien-Kwan Lin of the EastmanSchool. Second place in Chamber Music String was won by ¡Voila! Viola Trio, at the EastmanSchool with Chien-Kwan Lin. The National Winner in Chamber Music Wind was the saxophone quartet Project Fusion at the Eastman School, under Chien-Kwan Lin.
