INTRODUCTION

We now turn our attention to the Passion and Resurrection messages of the season. Along with them we will see how these thoughts surmise the very hope of all who believe in our Lord Jesus Christ. Hence I call this section, “God’s Will Be Done.” God wants His people to live and love in hope!

This week’s lesson takes place during the fellowship of the Passover meal. Family meals of the past were a great time for conversation, correction and encouragement. Our society is losing this important experience in the midst of its busyness and technology. Instead of the family sitting together, there is a separation, with one at a television, another at the computer, yet another at a video game and so on! How much we miss when we don’t fellowship with each other in the home.

God taught Moses in Egypt the importance of the family eating together. When Israel was under bondage, God prepared them for deliverance with the Passover. (Read Exodus 12:1-30 for details).

Our lesson this week takes place during the Passover meal, where Jesus teaches at supper. Let us zoom in on the conversation and learn some valuable lessons from the Master Teacher.

Anticipated Power Points…Jesus’ Teachings at Supper:

·  Faithfulness and Fellowship. Luke 22:14-20

·  Fallacy of Foolishness. Luke 22:21-23

·  Focusing on the Future. Luke 22:24-30

The Setting:

The final week of Jesus’ earthly ministry is at hand before His crucifixion. Luke’s account gives us a lot of details as the drama unfolds. In chapter 22 we note:

A. The Plot of the Priests. vss. 1-2

B. The Plan of Judas’ Betrayal. vss. 3-6

C. The Preparation for the Passover. vss. 7-13

LESSON OUTLINE

I. Faithfulness and Fellowship. Luke 22:14-20

A. Faithfulness. vss. 14-16

Jesus teaches us much about being faithful in spite of all circumstances. He sat with His spiritual family to eat His last Passover meal, knowing that He is the “Passover Lamb” that would soon be sacrificed for the sin of the world. John 1:29 tells us, “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

Are we so faithful in our commitment to desire to fulfill God’s will for our lives, in spite of all circumstances? Jesus knew

that suffering, pain, and death awaited Him. (Read Isaiah 50:6; 52:14; 53:3-6). HALLELUJAH TO THE LAMB! Jesus’ faithfulness was secured by the Father’s promise, vs. 16, “…until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.” Note Jesus’ total reliability on the Father in John 17:4-5, “I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do. And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was.”

B. Fellowship. vss. 17-20

The Passover ended: Jesus closes the Passover meal at this point in verses 17-18. The Jewish Passover traditionally used 4 cups of wine in its commemoration. According to Precepts for Living, “The first cup is with the opening benediction; the second cup is after the Hallel (Psalm 113-114); the third cup follows the meal and the fourth cup follows the conclusion of the Hallel.” Jesus was sure to fulfill all scripture. It is at this point that Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper, verses 19-20. He is the fulfillment of Moses’ Passover and now presents a new covenant or promise to all who would believe in Him. Paul writes more extensively of this in I Corinthians 11:23-34. Beloved, when we participate in the Lord’s Supper, as this new meal is called for the Church, let us remember: The bread represents the Lord’s broken, battered body and the cup symbolizes His eternal promise or covenant for the forgiveness of our sins! Let us take seriously the fellowship at the Lord’s Table with us, His spiritual family, and be faithful unto Him and one another!

II. Fallacy of Foolishness. Luke 22:21-23

Some things seem to not make sense, and so it is with sin as a whole, but who would think one inside the fellowship would raise their hand against the Lord. Jesus said in verse 22, “…but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!” And Matthew 26:24 further emphasizes that “it had been better that this man had never been born.” The thought of betraying the Son of God is a fallacy of foolishness and Judas did it as a familiar friend. Verse 23 really struck me, “they began to inquire among themselves.” God, deliver us from the fallacy of foolishness, not to in any way compromise our commitment to the Master by not totally knowing our personal commitment to Christ and the Church.

III. Focusing on the Future: Luke 22:24-30

A sinister snake among the Saints will spout its venom of influence. No doubt Satan’s presence in Judas helped wreak havoc among the eleven disciples. Now, in such a sacred hour, they began to argue over positions. (Read Mark 9:33-37). Beloved, the true saint of God never has to worry about the future; God always takes care of His own. This is verified in Matthew 6:31-34: Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” Jesus reassures the faithful that their future is totally secure in Him. All they needed to do is just serve each other as He had secured them. (Read John 13:12-17).

CLOSING

Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” Beloved, Jesus’ teachings at Supper brought eye opening truth. lLet us sit at the feet of our pastors, parents and divinely given teachers and mentors and learn great lessons for living!
