A Few Words about the Vourvoukelis Estate
In 1999, the family of Nikos and Flora Vourvoukelis, with the vision of rebuilding their renowned vineyard in Avdira, planted native and international varieties of wine grapes in an area of 2 hectares in the fertile hills.
Gradually, a privately owned vineyard spanning 10 hectares developed, which is cultivated according to the rules of organic agriculture. Organic agriculture was chosen because of the specific local micro-climate. Nowadays, two of the family's sons, Georgios and Odysseas, are working with the vineyard and wine production, with many years of studies in this area. In 2004, the modern Vourvoukelis family winery, which can be visited, was completed; it is located at the entrance to Avdira, next to the provincial road, at a distance of 20 km from the city of Xanthi and 40 km from Alexander the Great Airport of Kavala.
The winery possesses equipment with the latest technology, operates under strict conditions of hygiene mandated by HACCP and is certified under the ISO 22000 standard for quality assurance.
At the Vourvoukelis Estate, visitors can experience the ritual of wine.
They can receive information about the process of producing wine, be guided through the vineyard, visit the cellar with oak barrels, where the wines are aged under controlled temperature and humidity conditions, as well as the aging area for bottled wines, where the wines evolve under conditions of natural temperatures and humidity. There are also a reception area for visitors, an area for events such as exhibitions and lectures, and a tasting room for initiation into the art and philosophy of wine.
