About the Symposium on the International Cooperation with North Jiangsu
Aiming at stepping up the economic globalization of North Jiangsu and creating a platform of international cooperation for the region, the Symposium on the International Cooperation with North Jiangsu, jointly organized by Jiangsu Provincial Foreign Affairs Office and the municipal governments of Xuzhou, Lian Yungang, Huai’an, Yancheng and Suqian, will be held from November 26th-28h in Suqian.
The Symposium is a major effort to attract manufacturing industries and upgrade the sea ports to be logistics centers of international standards. The event will also help the restructuring of the industries along Lian Yungang-Xuzhou railway and the globalization process of local education, talents and economy. The Symposium will provide a gold opportunity for North Jiangsu and its international partners to promote exchanges and cooperation for a win-win prospect.
Xuzhou
Xuzhou used to be called Pengcheng in ancient times. With a long history and profound cultural heritage, it is granted with the title of State Two Support Model City, China Excellent Tourist City and China Top Ten Forestation City. It is bound to be one of four super cities and three cosmopolitan circles according to Jiangsu's blueprint of planning. It covers an area of 11258 square kilometers with a population of 9.04 million. It administrates 2 cities, 4 counties and 5 districts.
Xuzhou is located in the boundary area of Jiangsu, Shandong, Henanand Anhui provinces. It enjoys the strategic geographic advantage ofbeing close to the east, expanding to the west and connecting the north and south. Blessed with convenient transportation, it is the important national transportation hub characterized by the modern three-dimensional traffic system consisting of railway, highway, waterway, airway and pipeline. It is rich in resources and diversified in agricultural and sideline produce. It has a huge reserve of high-quality mineral resources such as coal, iron, limestone, marble stone, etc. It established a strong scientific and education force with 9 institutions of high learning, 5 adult colleges, 2 military college and 31 various scientific research institutions. It is the cradle of East Han and West Han Culture. Han tomb, Han stone painting and Han terra-cotta warriors and horses are named as the three unique. It is also home to many well-known historic relics like Xiangyu Horsing-training Platform, Liubang Dafengge Tablet and Sushi Crane-releasing Hall and attractive scenic spots such as YunlongMountain, YunlongLake and Quanshan National Forest Park.In recent years, Xuzhou's economy maintains stable increase and the over-all economic strength upgrades a lot. Xuzhou Construction Machinery Group Weiwei Group Datun Coal and Electricity Corporation are listed the top 520 corporations in China. Tertiary industry has developed boomingly and the role of regional logistics center and tourism center has further intensified. Foreign-oriented economy has made great headway. Many world well-known companies such as Caterpillar Rockwell and Haier Group settled here.
The urban construction of Xuzhou has also achieved great success. Lianyungang
Located in the north point of Jiangsu, being the east bridge tower of Asian and EuropeanContinentBridge, one of the first group coastal cities open to the outside, and the major tourism city in China, Lianyungang covers an area of 7444 km 2 , with a population 4.65 million. Now 4 counties and 3 districts are under jurisdiction.
Lianyungang is one of the coastal cities to take the lead to open to the outside world. Presently it has set trade cooperative relations with 85 countries and regions, and 35 countries and regions invested more than 2000 projects in Lianyungang. Lianyungang has the longest sea levee and the best hot spring in China, the highest mountain and the biggest island in Jiangsu, and has Yuwan waterfall rushing down and elegant Haizhou ancient city.
Lianyungang is a historical and cultural city with many historical sites. Lianyungang was called Manzhou in ancient times, Qu county in Qin Dynasty, Haizhou in Tang Dynasty and renamed Lianyungang in 1961. Lianyungang has many historical sites, for example, the rock picture of General Cliff is the most ancient rock picture in China, and the statue of KongwangMountain is the earliest Buddha statue. Lianyungang has a gathering of talents since ancient time. Confucius once climbed the mountain to see the sea here, emperor Qinshihuang made east tour three times and built east gate of Qin, Wuchengen wrote Journey to the West according to the HuaguoMountain, and Liruzhen wrote Romance of Mirror while living in Banpu.
As national key rice, cotton and edible oil production base and the major battlefield of constructing eastern Jiangsu on the sea, Lianyungang is a new industrial city with abundant resources, such as more than 40 nonmetal mining resources and 300 million tons of crystal reserves, that's why which is called the hometown of cystal. Medicine, chemical industry, fabric, food and construction material are basically formed the five pillar industries of Lianyungang, with 36 enterprises' overturn exceeding 100 million yuan. The Tianwan Nuclear Power Station Project with total investment of $3.2 billion is under construction and will become the major energy base of East China.
Huai'an
1. General Information
Huai'an is one of the thirteen cities under the direct jurisdiction of JiangsuProvince. It lies along the central part of the plain in northern Jiangsu and adjourns to the cities of Suqian, Lianyungang, Yancheng and Yangzhou and the province of Anhui. After the regional restructuring, Huai'an now has four areas, including Qinghe, Qingpu, Huaiyin and Chuzhou and comprises four counties like Lianshui, Hongze, Jinhu and Xuyi. There are altogether 117 towns, 11 street offices and 241 residential committees in the city. The total area of the city is 10.6 thousand square kilometers and the population is 5.1768 million. The cantonal area is 75 square kilometer and the population is 730 thousand. Huai'an locates in the temperate monsoon zone and has four distinct seasons, with average temperature 14 degree and annual precipitation 940 milliliter. The city has 2,130-2430 sunlight hours per-year.
2. Economic development
Since the opening up and reform, especially recent years, the economy and social affairs in the city have achieved long development.
The city's comprehensive strength improved step by step. The speed of economic development exceeds the national average for 10 continuous years. And the fiscal revenue grows by 7 times than that ten years ago. In the year 2002, the GDP of the city amounted to 37.502 billion yuan, increasing by 11.6%. The fiscal revenue reached 4.319 billion, increasing by 22%. The volume of retail consumable climbs to 12.76 billion yuan, up by 11.6%. The economic structure has been optimized and the proportion of three industries transferred from 1: 2: 3 to 26.8: 43.0:30.2.
Huai'an has now become the transportation hub in Jiangsu. The Beijing-Shanghai, Huai'an-Lianyungang and Nanjing-Suqian expressways which cross the city have been completed. Another two expressways like Nanjing-Huai'an, Xuzhou-Huai'an-Yancheng are in construction. The Xinchang railway, which has been put into operation also crosses the city. Huai'an also has a complete water networks. The Beijing-Hangzhou canal, northern Jiangsu irrigation system, HuaiheRiver and its route to the Yangtze River and the Yellow sea all locates in the city.
The city of Huai'an is speeding up its urbanization step. After the restructuring of the city, the central area of Huai'an has expanded from 40 square kilometers to 75 square kilometers and has become the second largest city in Jiangsu. The Huai'an is devoting itself to the city construction and infrastructure. The city has participated in series programs, such as nationally advanced clean city, environment model city, forestation city and provincial cultured city, to make the city cleaner and beautiful. A city with green tree and clean water has been put into agenda.
Huai'an's function as a regional trade hub is also growing. The city owns 418 markets with 22 markets' volume exceeding 100 million. The city, as Huaihai plaza as its commercial centre, owns a complete commercial network, including New Jinya department store, Huitong market and Qingjiang market, Times shopping centre, Mcdonald and KFC.
Yancheng
Yancheng lies along the central part of north Jiangsu and faces the Yellow Sea in the east and Yangzhou in the west. It adjourns to Nantong in the south and Lianyungang in the west. The city was upgraded from district to city in the year 1983 and now boasts 7 counties and two districts. The city has a total area 150 thousand square kilometers and population 8.07 million. It has the largest area and second largest population in Jiangsu.
Yancheng has rich natural resource and huge potential. The coastal line of the city extends to 582 kilometers and the area of wetland reaches 450 thousand hectares. It has the largest unused land in Jiangsu. The storage petroleum and natural gas is up to 210 billion cubic meters. The agriculture is one of the advantages of Yancheng and it has become the largest base in producing the agriculture products. The ecological tourism in the city has its own features. The city has the largest wetland in the Asia Pacific region. The first milu dear reservation and the national wild animal protection zone locate in the city. It is also a member place of the UN human and nature biosphere.
Yancheng is a new and open industrial city. The pillar industries of the city are textile, machinery, auto, food. Yueda Group is one of the 520 National key enterprises and one of the 20 key ones in Jiangsu. Senda Group is the largest leather shoes factory. The Yueda-Kia auto company has 130 thousand producing capacity per-year. At present, Yancheng has trade relations with 128 countries and regions in the world. A number of multi-national companies, such as Kia motors in South Korea, Triumph in Germany, Carrefour in France and Marzoli in Italy have their business in Yancheng.
Yancheng has a convenient transportation system. A modern transportation network including highway, railway, the air and the water have been established. Yancheng is the 4C level civil aviation stop. The city has opened domestic line to Beijing and Guangzhou and international line to Seoul in South Korea. It is the second earliest city in Jiangsu to open the international line. The Xinchang railway line, which has been put into operation also extends across the city. Dafeng port, which is now in construction, will be open to the world. The Yancheng-Nanjing expressway has put into full operation. Yancheng-Nantong, Yancheng-Huaiyin and Yancheng-Lianyungang expressways are speeding up their construction.
Suqian
Established in June 1996 as a prefecture-level city, SuqianCity is located in NorthJiangsuProvince. It covers an area of 8,555 square kilometers with a population of 5.17 million, and has jurisdiction over ShuyangCounty, SiyangCounty, SihongCounty, Suyu District and Sucheng District.
Suqian is rich in natural resources with great potentials. It has vast plains, fertile land and a crisscross network of rivers and lakes. It is the only prefecture-level city that has two grand natural freshwater lakes (the HongzehuLake and the LuomahuLake). Ten rivers such as Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal and the old Yellow River run through it. Its high-quality water area reaches 3.03 million mu(one hectare equals fifteen mu). Suqian is the production base of high quality agricultural by-products. Three counties under its jurisdiction are national bases of commercial grains as well as advanced counties of afforestation. So Suqian has been given the titles of the hometown of the poplar, the hometown of aquatic products, the hometown of the silkworm cocoon, the hometown of famous liquor, and the glass city. It also has abundant mineral resources including rich nonmetal minerals such as quartz sand, kyanite, silica, crystal, ground phosphate rock and yellow sand.
Suqian has many scenic spots, and was once highly praised as the best landscape in springà by Emperor Qiang Long of the Qing Dynasty. There are simple and primitive buildings of Xiang King's hometown, splendid imperial palace of Emperor Qian Long and three imposing tomb groups of the Han Dynasty. In the HongzehuLake and LuomaLake, there is a vast expanse of misty, rolling water, and rare birds staying together. The natural reserve of HongzehuLakeSwamp is the habitat of rare birds such as partridges through the winter. The provincial-level Fengshan Forest Park is beautiful and attractive. At present, Suqian is striving for creating a forestry-style, environmental friendly and gardenlike lakeside ecological city with sustained development.
Suqian is a new rising central city among the city groups at east bridgehead of EurasiaBridge. It lies in the crossing radiation zone of the Longhai Economic Zone, Coastal Economic Zone and Yangtze River Bank Economic Zone. It enjoys convenient transportation with the Beijing-Shanghai Expressway, Nanjing-Suqian-Xuzhou Expressway, Xuzhou-Suqian-Huaian-Yancheng Expressway, Yanghe-Xinyi first-class Highway, Xinyi-Changxing Railway and Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal running through it, which serve as bridges for Suqian to communicate with others in China as well as to go international.
