VETS LEAGUE: TWICKENHAM, 8 JUNE

Previous plans to run track races having been abandoned as a result of hamstring strains, this was my first venture onto the track since mid April. My rustiness showed as having kept up with the pace in the 800m for the first lap, I then fell back.

The 3000m was only 20 minutes later though it seemed more like the length of our recoveries on a Tuesday night. Rather predictably I felt like I was treading water from about halfway through. The times below are unofficial.

Eltham 5. The Frith's Return

Whilst most DRs were at the Beckenham 10k, the Friths returned to racing at the Eltham 5. This challenging multi terrain course was well organised and for once was it was not too hot.

Ian afterrecentoperation is returning to form and recorded 29.07 (6th). Colin on the comeback trail, yet again, after another injury recorded 35.56 and finished just ahead offormer DR Brain -the bullet-Maillardet.

Race Report

Duddon Valley Fell Races Saturday 30 May

On Friday 29th Chris Deacon and I headed to the Lake District to take part in the Duddon valley races, in the south-west corner of the Lakes. Chris was entering the short race (9miles 3000ft ascent), while I was going to attempt the long race (18 miles 6000ft ascent). We camped at an excellent campsite ½ a mile from the start, and awoke to perfect weather, clear blue skies with a stiff east breeze to keep the temperatures down.

The Long Race went off first, 218 starters heading up to CP1, the summit of Harter Fell. After my experiences in previous long fell races where I went off too fast, I took this very gently, and kept on feeling I could go much faster, but didn’t – there was a long way to go.

The descent from Harter Fell was one of the most glorious bits of running I have ever done, easy going on grass with crystal clear views to head of Eskdale. But the joy was going to turn to pain. After CP2 at the top of Hard Knott, there was a swift descent to Mosedale followed by Little Stand. Whoever named it that had clearly never climbed it! It is not “Little”, being 1200 feet of ascent, and most of it is too steep to stand up on! But it was very satisfying to reach the top and still be able to run.

An easy run followed to CP4 at the Three Shire Stone, followed by the last really big climb of the day to the top of Swirl How, the highest point of the race. The high point of this climb was meeting the great Jos Naylor on his way down, not that there was time for more than “Hello Jos”. At CP5, the summit of Swirl How, I was just about on the schedule I had set for myself, but starting to feel the pain. But the going was good off Swirl How, and along the traverse round Brim Fell. Then a shorter climb led to CP6 on Dow Crag. It was at this point I got my first twinges of cramp, but I was able to manage it much better than in the past, and kept running at a good pace, even overtaking one or two other runners. CP7 was at the end of a gentle grassy ridge called White Pike; as I started to leave the check point I realised the runners in front of me had disappeared.

I headed to the right only to be shouted at by the marshals to go left. I still did not go far enough, and eventually one of the runners I had overtaken caught me up and showed me the way down. The innocuous summit gave way to some serious crags, and my backside was as important as my feet in getting me down. Only one hill left, Caw, and it is a steep little thing, but from the top I could see the finish. A fairly quick descent enabled me to catch up with two runners. I thought I could take them if I sprinted through the boggy ground just above the finish. I duly sprinted, both legs sank into a foot of bog, both calves locked solid with cramp, and the rest of me cart-wheeled into the mud. So much for a great sprint finish! I lost about 45 seconds, but at least I was still inside my target time.

Meanwhile Chris set off with 50 others in the short race, which, staying on the east side of the Duddon Valley, traverses north for four or five miles, before heading up to the summit of Dow Crag, and then follows the Long Race course back to the finish. It was Chris’ first proper fell race, and he took it at a fairly steady pace. He managed a fast descent off Dow Crag, but, like the rest of us, found the ascent and descent of Caw pretty painful. By the time I arrived, he showered, changed and was ready with the camera.

Although it is a long way to go, we really recommend these races. They were very well organised, and very friendly, with lots of runners in the pub that night.

Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence 2 miles.
Battersea Park 8th June 2009-06-09

Having come into a bit of short-distance form lately I thought I’d have another go at a two-miler. A bit stiff in the calves after the Beckenham 10k the day before, I made sure I warmed up thoroughly for a change.

After the start I was surprised to find myself tucked in with the leaders and was just thinking I’d be there for the sprint when they pulled away with only 400 to go.

Ah well, third place a couple of seconds up on my time in the Club Champs and just six seconds down on the winner left me well pleased, although I was a bit miffed to discover later that I beat the first two over 5k only the week before.

Colin got 15th, improving six seconds on his Dulwich time, and Andy grabbed third V50 with a one second improvement. Louisa also had a good run gaining the third Lady prize.

Allocation of Race Numbers

In recent races, some members have entered, then been unable to run and transferred their numbers to other club members.

This is not allowed. We are affiliated to UK Athletics and therefore bound by its rules, which include:

NUMBERS ARE ISSUED TO THE INDIVIDUAL ATHLETE COMPLETING THE APPLICATION FORM AND ARE NON-TRANSFERABLE EXCEPT WITH THE SPECIFIC AUTHORITY OF THE RACE SECRETARY.

People running in other people's numbers can really confuse the results, and also in the event of accidents or illness, organisers need to have correct identities.

Most race organisers will agree to change numbers if they are contacted in good time, but this is not always possible in larger races, and definitely not in the London Marathon which has strict entry rules.

Gorilla Tactics

If anyone has ever had an urge to run through London dressed in a gorilla outfit then they might want to go to this link:

http://www.greatgorillas.org/

which was on a flyer handed out at Charing Cross station for a 7km London

race on Saturday 26th September 2009.

Might be a good photo op, not often you see a bunch of gorillas running through London with a Dulwich vest on.
