2012 Scholarships and Vocational Awards
Metroplex Health System Volunteers
Applications for scholarships are now being accepted for the 2012-2013 school year.
Metroplex Health System volunteers administer these financial rewards on the basis of merit and financial need.
Metroplex volunteers contribute and maintain the scholarship funds through fundraising activities and by soliciting voluntary contributions.
To be considered for an award, a candidate must carry a B (3.0) or higher average on a 4.0 scale.In addition to an overall 3.0 or higher average, applicants are must meet the requirements of one or more of the following four categories:
- Volunteer- anyone currently volunteering a minimum of 4 hours per week for Metroplex Health System and pursuing a degree program in a human health-related field.
- Employee-a current employee of Metroplex Health System who is pursuing a degree program in a human health-related field.
- Vocational education programs – current employees and volunteers of Metroplex Health System who are pursuing a certification program, whether medical or ancillary, which would increase employment and/or volunteer potential at Metroplex Health System.
- A graduating senior from any high school located in Bell, Coryell, or Lampasas counties, who will pursuing a professional education in the human health care field.
Please note the following exceptions:
- The Asha and BalkrishnaBodas Scholarship is only awarded to a Metroplex Health System employee or a child of a Metroplex Health System employee. Applicant must be pursuing a career in either nursing or education.
- The Dr. Joseph Thoppil Scholarship is only awarded to a candidate who is pursuing a professional degree in the pediatric field. Candidates can be pursuing a career as a physician or a registered nurse.
- The Suzi and Ken Chapman Scholarship only is open to current Metroplex Health System employees or their children. The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of need, as well as academic standing, and is not restricted to human health care.
- The Posse Scholarship will be awarded to a student in a vocational area of human health care. Students entering medical school or nursing school will be not considered for this award.
Scholarships to be awarded:
- Dr. Joseph Thoppil - $1,000.00 – pediatric medicine only
- Asha and BalkrishnaBodas - $1,000.00– education or nursing only (currently unavailable for new students)
- Dot Hausmann – $1,500.00
- Begelman-Jacknowich Foundation –$1,000.00 (can vary from 0 to 3 awards)
- Jimmie Smith - 2 @$1,000.00
- Suzette and Ken Chapman – $1,000.00 Requires FAFSA application and acceptance to be considered for this scholarship and is only for Metroplex Hospital employees or their children. Scholarship will be based on need, and students pursuing all types of higher education will be considered.
- Sid Wieser Memorial Scholarship - $1,000.00 – This is an ongoing scholarship for human health care students. Students meeting the basic scholarship requirements on an annual basis will continue to receive $1,000.00 per school year, with a maximum award of $4,000.00.
- Posse Scholarship - $1,000.00. Only awarded to a vocational student in human health care. Students must meet basic scholarship academic requirements and must be planning a career in vocational human health care. Students studying nursing or planning to enter medical school will NOT be considered.
Fields of study include, but not limited to: - Biomedical equipment maintenance
- Laboratory technician certification
- Respiratory therapist certification
- Phlebotomist training
- Radiology assistant training
- Sonography
Application Process:
Volunteers and employees of Metroplex Health System may reapply each academic year as long as application criteria continue to be met. Funds are to be used for tuition, fees, and books; and will be paid directly to the college or university where the student is enrolled.The number of scholarships awarded will be determined by the available scholarship funds.
Awards presented in Spring, 2012 will be valid for the 2012-2013 school year. Applications can be downloaded from the Metroplex Health System web site: or by contacting school counselors. The information desk at Metroplex Hospital will also have applications available.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to provide all of the following information to the Scholarship Committee. Applications missing any of this information will NOT BE considered and will be automatically disqualified. Applicants will NOT BE contacted if their application is incomplete.
- Application Form and Original Essay
- Official high school or college transcript
- Three (3) letters of recommendation
Confidentiality: Information provided to the Scholarship Committee will be for evaluation purposes only and will be held in strict confidence. All applications will be shredded at the end of the review process.

DEADLINE: Completed applications must be received postmarked no later than March 30, 2012. Applications received postmarked after this date will not be considered. Interviews will be held the week of April 16-19, 2012. Scholarship winners will be notified no later than 5 business days after the interview process is complete.
AWARD PRESENTATION: Scholarship funds will be awarded at the Volunteer Annual Meeting, to be held on or about May 15, 2012. It is mandatory that all scholarship recipients to attend the Annual Meeting. Any recipient who does not attend will not receive their funds.
