Advanced Training Schools / GM Addition
Colleges, universities, technical schools, vocational institutes by any other name are a places of higher learning. Places where professionals whose wish to improve their employment marketability, advance their own careers, or just advance their knowledge within, or outside of, their chosen professions.
Just as there are institutions like Coprates University where a RAM executive can obtain a degree in Business Administration; New Elysium Temple of Learning where an Aphroditian plantation owner’s son can obtain a degree in Agricultural Management; and Caloris University of Mercury where a Mercurian contract negotiator can obtain a degree in Business Law, so too there are institutions for the education of the more adventurous careers. There are academies where a medic can become a doctor, a rocketjock can become a master pilot and ship’s captain, and a warrior can become an officer. Places called – Advanced Training Schools (ATS).
Please note that not all careers lend themselves to training in a schoolhouse environment.
NOTE: This section is for career oriented ATS programs. Non-career oriented programs are available throughout the solar system. These programs may include any degree program the character may be interested in (GM’s discretion), will have only one instructional level, will take four years, and cost will depend on location and program.
General Degree Program Information
Each ATS offers two, or more, course levels for their specialty degree programs. Some ATSs also offer individual refresher courses (AD program courses only, see below for costs, duration one month per course) for those that would like to “brush up” on their skills but are not able to attend full-time. The two most common programs are an Apprentice Degree (AD) program and a Master’s (MD) Degree program.
Apprentice Programs: The AD programs (incl. appropriate Training Certificates), which must be taken first, offers the student a sound footing into the world of higher education as well as boosting his skills, confidence, and future potential. Upon completion of the chosen program, the student must make an INT attribute check to "graduate."
- If successful, the student gains all the skill bonuses listed.
- If unsuccessful, an INT attribute check may be made for each of the classes; for each successful check the student gains half the listed bonus (rounding down) for that skill.
Master’s Programs: The MD program (incl. appropriate Training Certificates) builds upon the successful completion of the requisite AD program to aid the student in attaining mastery in his chosen field of study. Once the student has completed the program and obtained his degree, he is considered a Master in his field and is highly sought after by employers. Upon completion the student must make a "dropout" check (10%. per year attended) and an INT attribute check to "graduate.” Please note that not all of the ATSs offer a Master’s Program.
- If both checks are successful, the student gains all the skill bonuses listed.
- If both checks are unsuccessful, the student does not gain any bonuses. He was either not smart enough, dedicated enough, or sober enough to have learned anything.
- If the student "drops out," a LUK attribute check may be made for each of the classes; for each successful check the character gains that skill bonus.
- If the attribute check fails, an INT attribute check may be made for each of the classes; for each successful check the character gains half the listed bonus (rounding down) for that skill.
Attending a particular degree program more then once or attending multiple degree programs will not add to the bonuses previously awarded for a particular skill. In the unfortunate event that anyone should fail, they may attend the program again, however, they will be awarded only the bonuses they did not obtain earlier.
Skill Points Information
The skill points awarded for graduating from an ATS are training points not a bonus percentage. They are treated the same as the points gained for career and general skills when advancing an experience level. Unlike the level advancement training points, the ATS training points are pre-spent on specific skills and may not be applied elsewhere. Since the ATS training points are the same as the level advancement training points they count towards prerequisite requirements.
However, like bonus percentages, these points cannot be used to learn new skills. The points awarded are not applied unless the character has already learned the applicable skill. If not, once the character learns the applicable skill then the points may be applied. Remember, after 1st level a character cannot learn more then one new (general) skill per level.
