Ingraham IABC Board Meeting

September 13, 2015 | Draft Minutes

7:30 / Tanya/Julie / Welcome
7:32 Meeting called to order
7:35 / Lisa / Approval of AugustMinutes
Lisa presented the minutes.
  • Grant made a motion to approve the August IABC Board Meeting Minutes; Glen seconded it and it passed unanimously.
Karen asked for help getting student contact info for the breakfast.
7:35 / Holly / Financial Report
  • Holly shared the IABC general fund status report.
  • IABC started the year with $23,877 and ended with $43,470, but most of it is encumbered. However, it’s possible that not all of it will be spent.
  • After accounting for the encumbered funds, IABC has an available balance of $7,735. Most will probably go to the Snack Shack.
  • Some sports have spent money over the summer, and Holly has the details. There is some lag time between reimbursement requests and updating the website, but generally, the amount available for each team is accurate on the website.
Relationship with the Alliance for Education
  • IABC is having meetings with the Alliance – they are only going to support SPS for free through January 2017. They have a new director coming in October, when they will clarify how they are going to fund themselves (ie charge schools or big donor). After the Champions Breakfast, we will need to figure out how we want to handle finances in the future. They might offer to provide services for a fee, and we will need to decide if that’s what we want to do. Or we can get our own 501c3, which takes some time.
  • FOI broke off from Alliance and are now their own 501c3, so we could learn from them.

7:45 / Traci / Athletic Director Report – Welcomed everyone
  • Varsity girls soccer tied Garfield 1-1; VB happening now.
  • Dates on calendar should be up to date.
  • All team photos done except football.
  • Need Girls soccer captains and trying to get rosters.
  • Head boys soccer coach position is posted; assistant tennis coach, as well.
  • True Colors coach training went well; Tom Doyle former AD at Seattle Prep led the training. It outlines the four athlete personality types and helps coaches identify them; Emphasizes that coaches need to meet students at their level, not coach’s; Provides coaches with strategies to communicate appropriately with athletes and with parents.
  • Traci reports that the coaches really liked it and are using it.
  • Steve and Jen attended and gave positive feedback.Full report attached.
  • Karen pointed out that another piece of the training was to work with individual coaches who have been identified as having communication issues.
  • This training cost $1500 for the year. IABC allocated$5000 for training, so $35k left to spend
New bell times impacting athletes. Swimming now before school.
  • Not good news re buses for teams. Game start times pushed back but SPSwill not/ cannot provide busses much later than 1 PM, which means many are now missing over 2 hours of school in the afternoon. (Traci asks for 2:30- 330.)
  • ADs were not in favor of later start because of the impact on after school sports. Traci feels we are going to lose kids from sports because they can’t miss so much school.
  • She recommends that we form a committee to draft something to present as a united front to transportation and school board. Our message is that it is not acceptable for student athletes to have to miss so much school because SPS will not provide buses at a later time. We need to ask for later buses.
  • Currently, a 1 pm bus costs $250.
  • A bus at 2:30-3 is a Journey Line at a cost of $800; Traci is trying to get as many late buses as she can and just pay for it out of her AD budget, but the district says there aren’t enough buses.
  • Another big issue is that SPS is still sharing fields with Parks, which limits school time on the fields; the Joint Use Agreement needs to be renegotiated.
  • Traci reminded us all to join Ingraham Ram Fans Facebook page.
ACTION: Julie will start a committee (Andrea, Lynn, Steve, Lisa), coordinate with Ballard and Roosevelt.
8:15 / Debbie / Team Liaisons Discussion and Q&A
