Industrial Ecology Center (Industrijsko Ekoloski Centar) of Serbia

This new non-profit NGO has been registered in Serbia. It is a subsidiary of the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University. Its mission is to bring together industrial and academic resources in Serbia and Montenegro and stimulate research and development towards the recovery of energy and materials from solid wastes, thus stimulating the formation of new business, improving environmental quality and conserving valuable resources of the nation.

In its starting-up period, the Industrijsko Ekoloski Centar (IEC) is funded by the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University (EEC). However, the new organization will seek financial support from U.S. and E.U. agencies and also from charitable foundations who are concerned with economic development and environmental quality in Serbia and Montenegro.

Columbia University was founded in 1754 and is one of the major universities in the United States of America. Its faculty and graduates have been honored over the years with and since its foundation in 1754 its faculty and graduates have been honored over the years with 63 Nobel Prizes. The mission of the Earth Engineering Center is to develop and promote technologies that can help in the sustainable development of the Earth's resources: minerals, energy, water, and the environment. One of the major projects of EEC is Integrated Waste Management that entails the recovery of energy and materials from wastes and has led to the formation of the U.S. Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WTERT; www.columbia.edu/cu/wtert).
