Activity Title: Bike Safety Check
Level: Adult (Instructor)
Time Frame: 5-10 minutes
Materials: Bicycles, helmets, Bike Inspection Sheets
Video(s): None
Description: The purpose of this activity is to show children how to conduct a quick, simple safety inspection of their bicycle before they go for a ride. Using a paper checklist, children will examine the main components of the bicycle, checking each item off on the list as they go. An adult or parent should correct unsafe items.
Activity: This activity is designed to teach children safety concepts as it relates to their bicycle. By following the "A-B-C Quick Check" checklist, children form a habit of inspecting their bicycle before every ride. In this way, dangerous mechanical conditions and crash-causing problems are identified and eliminated. Children meet outside at the Bicycle Safety Building in Kiwanis Safety City. Armed with their checklists, they begin the inspection.
A) Children check the tires for proper Air pressure.
B) Children check the Brakes for sufficient function.
C) Children check the Chain and Crank for lubrication and tightness.
D) Children check the seat, handlebars and wheels for tightness, correct adjustment, damage or wear.
Each component is recorded on the checklists as being safe or needing attention.
Discussion: Primary discussion during this activity should focus on:
1) Why is it necessary to check air pressure, and pump the tire up if it needs air?
2) Why are properly functioning brakes important?
3) Why should the chain, crank and gears be lubricated, adjusted and tight?
4) Why is it important to have the seat at the right height, and tight? The handlebars?
5) Why should the wheels and spokes be inspected before the bicycle is ridden?
6) What is the most important safety feature you wear that is not on the bicycle?
Summary: The purpose of this activity is teach children how to do a safety inspection of their bicycle, using the "A-B-C Quick Check" method and checklist, before going for a ride. By checking the bicycle over before heading down the street, children can help eliminate dangerous mechanical conditions that could cause crashes, and help enforce general safety practices when riding their bicycle.
