This project came about due to the personal experience of Carmel while caring for her Mum Angela, who had Vascular Dementia. From her journey it was clear that more information, signposting of services, up skilling of medical professionals, community services and family supports was needed. This led to the successful ‘Dementia in Rural Ireland Conference’ in Galway this year,as well as many other local and regional dementia awareness raising initiatives.

Anchorlily
Catherine Daly, Founder of Anchorlily, Co. Dublin

This project involves creating and selling bespoke products that places the person’s life history on their lap, through a blanket which has images of their significant life events and memories printed onto it. This has enabled the person with dementia to interact independently with their memories and help them anchor them back to their identity.

Bridging the Gap – A book to explain dementia to children

The project team have created a book to help explain dementia to children in a gentle and relevant way. Creating a book from an Irish perspective will make it more relevant to Irish children and their families. It is hoped that this book will bridge the generational gap between the person with dementia and the children they may have in their lives.

Supervalu - Creating a Dementia Friendly Shopping Experience

Shopping has been shown as one of the functional tasks a person with dementia continues to
carry out after a diagnosis has been made. The main concept of this project is to create dementia friendlySuperValu stores nationally by implementing dementia awareness staff training in all stores and making positive changes to the store environment.

Delirium Bundle
Nichola Cullen, Dementia Together, Belfast, Northern Ireland

The project aims to provide continuity of service provision for patients with dementia who are at increased risk of delirium, especially in the acute setting. The project will benefit patients who are receiving care, their family and carers who are attending the acute facility and the staff who are providing the care.

Mary Walsh and Aideen Lawlor, St Mary’s Hospital, Co. Dublin

This project involves the use of an evidence based supported pictorial communication system called “Talking Mats”. Talking Mats can empower the person with dementia to voice important issues. The aim is to provide free training and support to sixSpeech and Language Therapists working with people with dementia,who would commit to using Talking Mats in their service and to exploring this in relation to the Assisted Decision Making (Capacity) Act 2015.

Home Based Care – Home Based Education

This project involves the development of an online training and education course for family carersof a person with dementia.The Alzheimer Society of Ireland has been deliveringthe Insights into Dementia course via face to face sessionsfor a number of years and are conscious the need to offer an online version of the course. This project also plans to develop a ‘Quality Framework User's Guide’ and which will provide information, advice and practical plans which will enable these organisations to facilitate the course for their service users.

Nutrition and Dementia Booklet

This resource provides a practical guide to optimum nutrition and mealtime experience when caring for a person with dementia, produced by Dietitians working in Ireland, who are members of the Older Person and Dementia Interest Group (OPDIG), a special interest group of the Irish Nutrition and Dietetics Institute (INDI).
