Note: These activities will likely take more than one day to complete and can be repeated over time.
Activity #1:
Skill / Materials / ActivityAnswering questions about stories /
- Favorite bedtime book
- Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes
- The Grouchy Ladybug by Eric Carle
- Time for Bed by Mem Fox
- After you’re done reading the story with your child, ask them:
What the story was about?
Where did the story takeplace?
Note: If you can, read a minimum of 20 minutes a day with your child.
Activity #2:
Skill / Materials / ActivityPhonics /
- Flash cards provided in PDF
- Crayons
- Paper
- Print out the three sets of flashcards provided.
- First set should be AN with individual cards labeled, F, R, P and C
- Second set should be EN with individual cards labeled T, M, P and H.
- Third set should be IG with B, P, W and D.
- Each letter when added to should the AN, EN and IG should create a different word. For example, in the first set you will create the four words Fan, Ran, Pan and Can.
- Create the words with each set, and have your child writeeach word after they successfully read the word out loud.
Activity #3
Skill / Materials / ActivityLearning the alphabet /
- Crayons
- Construction paper
- Hole punch
- Two pieces of ribbon or string
- Draw an upper case “A” and a lower case “a” at the top of a piece of construction paper.
- Have your child copy the upper and lower case letters.
- Have your child name something that begins with an “A”. Have them draw that object below the letter “A”.
- Repeat the above steps for every letter in the alphabet. (Note to families: Prompt children to work on 1-3 letters a day. This project will take several days to complete.)
- When you have completed letters A-Z, punch holes along the side of the pages and tie with a ribbon to make your A, B, C book!
Activity #4:
Skill / Materials / ActivityPracticing forming letters/ Matching words to objects /
- Index cards
- Crayon
- Tape
- Write down on index cards the names of objects that your child uses on a day to day basis.
- Have them copy the word under where you write it on the index card.
- Have a scavenger hunt through your home, instructing your child to find each object.
- Have your child tape the index card on/above the object.
