The Korean Government invites excellent students who are majoring in the fields of science and engineering at the universities and colleges of the 10 designated ASEAN countries. This training program is designed to provide students with an in-depth academic training in the science and engineering fields and invaluable experience in Korea. This program seeks to nurture future leaders who will contribute to the development of global society and further friendship between Korea and their home country. Students who are interested in this training program are welcome to apply.

1. Title : 2015 GKS for ASEAN countries' SCIence and ENgineering Students

2. Period : July 6th (Monday) ~ August 14th (Friday) 2015 (6 weeks)

3. Number of participants :20 undergraduate students at CNU

4. Host organization : National Institute for International Education (NIIED), Ministry of Education, Republic of Korea

5. Training Institution: Chonnam National University

6. Eligibility

a. Be a citizen of one of the 10 designated ASEAN countries*

* Brunei, Singapore, Phillippines, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Thailand and Vietnam

b. Be enrolled in the second to fourth year as an undergraduate student who majors in science or engineering in the university/college located in one of the 10 designated ASEAN countries

c. Be fluent in either English or Korean

* Priority will be given to the applicants with Korean fluency.

d. Be mentally and physically healthy

e. Have the ability and willingness to adapt to Korean culture and life in Korea

* Eligibility & Required documents: same as 2015 GKS guidance from NIIED

Application process

1. Application Deadline: May 8th

* Applications will be processed on the first come first serve basis.

2. How to Apply

a. All applicants are required to fill out the CNU ①application form, ② Self-Introduction and Research

Plan, and ⑤ A Letter of Recommendation from an Academic Source(preferable from a professor).

b. Please attach all the required documents below to your printed ①②⑤forms. Then make it one

“scanned” copy (in colors), and send it to the application office at CNU “by email” before the deadline.

c. If you pass the document screening, you will be invited for an interview from your application office.

Interviews will be conducted by either Skype or phone.

3. Main Notes

a. The selection process for applicants will proceed in second steps. Firstly, applicants must be selected

by a designated university(CNU) he or she is applying through.

Secondly, applicants who passed the first round must be selected by the NIIED Selection Committee.

b. If applicants write their address and telephone number incorrectly, or they are out of contact, they are responsible for all the inconveniences resulting from those mistakes.

c. Submitted documents will not be returned.

▣Benefits:

a. NIIED and/or the training institutions will be responsible for round trip air ticket, room and board

during the duration of the program, and traveler’s insurance.

b. Participants will be responsible for transportation fare in his/her country, visa fee, etc.

▣Program Overview

1. Lectures on Science and Engineering

The main purpose of the lectures is to enhance the trainees’ understanding of intelligent materials and component. The lectures will center around two of the most fundamental subjects in the field: Materials Science 1andBasic Design of Applied Chemical Engineering.

*These subjects grant 3 credits respectively. Students who wish to have this CNU program( 2015 GKS for ASEAN countries' SCIence and ENgineering Students) credits transferred to your home university are advised to consult with the study abroad advisor at your university in advance.

**It is unfortunately impossible to issue attachments with estimated equivalent evaluation used at the host university. Herewith, it is advisable to make sure there is a policy at home university that it enables student to covert the Korean CREDIT grades into the evaluation in use there.

2. Laboratory Experiments

Conducting research projects: The trainees will carry out research projects in their chosen field in 10 well-equipped research and laboratory facilities. (Please refer to the file on the research and lab facilities for more details.)

One to one mentoring by graduate students: One to one mentoring is provided by graduate students for a total of 88 hours of laboratory experiments. A pair of graduate students team up with a pair of trainees.

3. Visits to Research Institutes and Industrial Sites

The visits are intended to provide the trainees with invaluable on-the-spot experience in close cooperation with related laboratories, research institutes, and industrial sites.

Collaborating labs and institutes: The collaborative network is made up of labs and research institutes in the primary local industries of photonics, die and mold, automobiles, white goods, steel, and petrochemicals.

Activities: The trainees are acquainted with the current status of relevant industries, observe how products are manufactured, and participate in on-the-spot programs

Linkage with lab experiments: Visits to research organization like Korea Photonics Technology Institute and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology, which are experiential in nature, are linked to the analysis of research projects carried out by the trainees with the assistance of graduate students..

4. Lectures on Korean Language and Culture

The lectures are designed to help the trainees gain a better understanding of Korea and the diverse aspects of Korean culture.

How lectures are organized: The lectures aim to foster the trainees’ deeper understanding of Korean culture including traditional Korean music and art as well as Korean history, Korean economy and Korean society in general. Lecture topics include Korean and Korean culture, understanding Korean society, economic development of Korea, understanding traditional Korean art, understanding traditional Korean music, and understanding Korean history.

5. Field Trips

The field trips are mainly intended to promote the trainees’ understanding of and familiarity with Korea by giving them an opportunity to experience firsthand the Korean history and culture they have learned from the lectures.

How field trips are organized: The field trips are primarily experiential, offering opportunities to experience local culture as well as overall Korean culture. The field trips include a stay at a Buddhist temple, a visit to an old Confucian school, and a kimchi-making experience.
