Course Description
This course will focus on topics relevant to the practicing speech-language-pathologist in acute, subacute, home and long-term care settings. Perspectives on a variety of clinical topics will be discussed within the context of levels of evidence currently available. Topics will include: prevention of aspiration pneumonia in several practice settings (including use of thickeners for liquids), use of feeding tubes (NGT, PEG) in conjunction with PO intake, protocols for the assessment of tracheotomized adults, review of pill swallowing physiology, and a variety of treatment approaches based on physiological data. Overall focus will be on working with adults, however, data relevant to pediatrics will be presented on relevant topics. Case presentations will aid discussions, including presentation of available instrumental work-up for each. Audience participation and collaborative problem-solving will be encouraged throughout the workshop
