INTRODUCTION

The online Ph.D. in Parks, Recreation and Tourism Management (PRTM), with a cognate area in Recreational Therapy, has been designed specifically to ensure strong research and educator training, optimize opportunities for student-faculty interaction and mentoring, and to address an essential need in the field for educators and researchers in recreational therapy. The online format will enable us to prepare individuals to meet the same expectations as students on campus, while accommodating the needs of students who are unable to pursue a traditional, residential path to degree completion. We will do this through innovative approaches including individualized mentoring, three 5-day on-campus residencies (5 consecutive days per year for the first three years of the program), synchronous on-line instruction, and an educational plan designed specifically to meet the needs of each student. We are excited to work with you!

GENERALACADEMICINFORMATION

Residencies

The three residencies (held on the Clemson University campus) are required for all individuals in the program. Residencies will be held in early-mid May.

Expectations of the Ph.D. Student

The Ph.D. program in PRTM is an advanced research-based program of study, concluding with the successful creation and defense of a dissertation as the capstone project. In addition to gaining the skills needed to conduct independent research, Ph.D.studentswillalsoengage inasequenceofprofessionalexperiencesdesignedtodevelopcompetenciesinfacultyskillssuchas teaching, advising, gradingstudentwork, preparingmanuscripts, andpresentingscholarly papers.SincethePh.D.degreeistheterminaldegreeinourfield,standards ofstudentperformanceare higherthanthe standards expectedatthemaster'slevel.

The advisor/student relationship, particularly for PhD students, is an extremely important one. Maintaining frequent contact with the advisor via phone, Skype, Facetime, and so forth will benefit the student and advisor greatly.

Work Experience Related to Coursework

If a student has work experience that they would like to have considered instead of a specific course, the student will need to talk with the course instructor and detail why and how previous experiences may supersede the course. If the work experience is approved by the instructor, the student will sign up for an independent study with the instructor to work on a manuscript for publication related to the course topic.

Manuscripts and Conference Presentations

One of the important aspects of pursuing a Ph.D. is training in all aspects of research, including data collection, data analysis, and dissemination of results. When universities are reviewing potential job candidates, they closely examine the individual’s vita for the product of this research, most specifically conference presentations, and published manuscripts. Whenever possible, students are encouraged to complete class assignments at such a high quality and relevance that they are able to be finessed into a conference presentation or manuscript. Students are strongly encouraged to work closely with their advisor to take advantage of these opportunities.

FinalDoctoralOralExamination: ThestudentmustpassafinaldissertationdefensebydatesspecifiedbytheGraduateSchool. A dissertation defense typically entails a 15-30 minute presentation by the candidate to the dissertation committee and general public which highlights the main points of the study. After the presentation, members of the audience who are not committee members will be permitted to ask questions. Next, non-committee members will be dismissed, and the committee will ask the candidate questions related to the study. The student is expected to be able to speak in depth about the study, the literature supporting the study, the methods, the data analysis, the results, and the implications for practice and future research. After this line of questioning, the candidate will be excused while the committee deliberates about the outcomes of the defense, which typically will include: pass, pass with revisions, major revisions required, or fail.
