To Kill a Mockingbird: Maycomb Map
The author of To Kill a Mockingbird, Harper Lee, creates a fictional county in which Jem, Scout, Atticus and an entire cast of characters reside. In this activity, you will create a map of Maycomb County using clues and descriptions in the novel.
What do I include on my map? There are several landmarks that are required to appear on your map.
Draw at least 8 but you can draw more for extra credit.
· Homes: Atticus Finch, Miss Maudie, Mrs. Henry LaFayette Dubose, The Radley Place, Mr. Avery, Miss Rachel Haverford, and Cecil Jacobs.
· Other Possible Landmarks: The school, Radley Tree, Post Office, fence by the school yard.
What else is required?
v Provide quotations/citations for each place on your map that explain how you know where it is located.
For example, to map the home of Cecil Jacobs, write the quotation that helped you identify where his house was located in Maycomb.
· “Cecil Jacobs, who lived at the far end of our street next door to the post office…” (35).
v List 3 important events/situations that occurred at each place and include the page where you found it.
For example: At Miss Rachel’s house you might add:
· First met Dill. “Early one morning as we were beginning our day’s play in the backyard, Jem and I heard something next door in Miss Rachel Haverford’s collard patch” (6). (maybe draw a collard patch behind Miss Rachel’s house and add this detail there)
v The map should be in color.
v The map should be titled and directions (north, south, east, and west) should be marked.
What materials do I need?
· Large sheet of white paper
· Paper Markers/colored pencils
· The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird
