Objectives:

Set:

Gather your belongings and pick up your desk; we are being forced to move. According to the principal, another class needs this classroom. We are being relocated to the janitor’s closet down the hall. Ask students if this would be an easy or hard thing to do to move the entire classroom? What about their entire lives? What if it wasn’t down the hall, but over a thousand miles?

Procedures:

1. Do Now. (3 min.)

2. Set (4 min)

3. TTW introduce the topic of the Trail of Tears, assimilation, and acquisition of Native American land (4min).

4. TSW read p. 82-85 in the book on their own. (7 min).

5. TSW complete a chart and worksheet that accompanies the reading (15 min)

6. TT&SW review the chart and questions (6 min)

7. TSW complete a short journal entry about the Trail of Tears (7 min)

8. Closure (4 min)

Closure:

TTW ask students to share their journal entries with the class. TTW then ask about the treaties that ceded the land.

Assessment/Evaluation:

Informal: TTW observe (M) students as they identify and answer questions (C). TTW ask questions to check for comprehension.

Formal: TSW create a chart to identify treaties and summarize the information by answering questions (C) for a daily grade (D). TSW describe life on the Trail of Tears in a journal entry (C) for a daily grade (D).

“WE BID FAREWELL TO OUR NATIVE LAND”- TRAIL OF TEARS JOURNAL ENTRY

Directions: As you now know from your reading, the Trail of Tears forced Native Americans off of their land. They were forced to walk thousands of miles will all of their possessions. Imagine that you are a Native American walking the Trail of Tears. In a short journal entry (6 sentence MINIMUM!), describe your life on the Trail of Tears. Use the following questions to guide your journal entry.

1. Who are you walking with? Your parents? Your siblings? Your cousins? Who is with you?

2. What is a typical day like on the Trail of Tears? When do you wake up? What do you eat? How do you cook your food? When do you eat? Where do you sleep? When do you sleep? What do you do to pass the time?

3. How do you feel about having to walk? Are you sad about leaving your home? How do you feel about finding a new home? What do you wish to see at your new home? What do you hope will be different?
