Juntura Committee meeting minutes - Sept. 28, 2000

Present: Rodney Frey, Elinor Michel, Jerry Wegman, Carrie Huskinson, Dona Walker, Lily Wai, and guest Raul Sanchez.

Introduction:

We went around the room and introduced ourselves.

Rod Frey is a faculty in Soc/Anth and is involved with the American Indian Studies Program.

Elinor Michel is in teacher education and a long time faculty member of this committee.

Jerry Wegman teaches business law from the College of Business. He gave a very positive report on the Cinema program that he has been involved in the past two years. Four films were shown last year with packed crowd most of the time in the Borah Theater. The most successful one is the last film "Snow falling on cedars." This program now has the full support of the UI administration and the program may become an institutionalized program co-housed in Multicultural Affairs and the Special Assistant on Diversity's Offices so that there would be budget line to fund this program on a more permanent basis.

Carrie Huskinson is the only student member present. She is a public communication major representing Student for Equal Opportunities & Education group.

Dona Walker is the Director of Multicultural Affairs.

Lily Wai is a long time Moscow resident and UI Library faculty.

Raul Sanchez, Special Assistant on Diversity and Human Rights, gave a brief report on the emergency he just encountered this afternoon. It was the reason he was late for the meeting. The news will be in tomorrow's students' newspaper Argonaut. He asked for input from the committee members dealing with this "issue". We discussed the dilemma on ways to recruit new students of diversity, and at the same time to stay "truthful" to the facts. There was no easy answer. One suggestion was made that the UI administration should take advantage of this controversy and make the bad situation into a positive experience.

Lily asked Raul his work plan for this year and may be the committee can work with him on these activities. He promised that he would email us the work plan and would like to get our input.

Carrie brought up some issues with the make-up of the ASUI Senate. Currently, all representatives are from the living groups. They represent only 45% of the student population. She would like to see that there are one representative from each of the following groups:

Non-traditional students

Minority students

Students with disabilities

Dona Walker mentioned that Asian American and Pacific Islanders Association is trying to seek a seat at ASUI Senate. Carrie said there are two vacant seats available now. Any group can submit a request.

Carrie said that her group would like to see that all entering new students take a core course with diversity element. It should be a core requirement for the 1st or 2nd year of their college education.

Elinor brought up the need for support service for CAMP students who are taking the core discovery courses. The CAMP advisors should play more active role in coordinating with the core course instructors to make sure the CAMP students get adquete support before they are advised to drop the course. (Three CAMP students recently dropped out of one of the Core

Discovery course.) The committee will invite Yolanda Bisbee, the CAMP

advisor to our next meeting.

Lily suggested that the Juntura Committee should include the Special Assistant on Diversity and Human Rights as a w/o vote member. She would approach the Faculty Secretary to find out what the procedures are to add a member to this committee.

Next meeting will be Oct. 17, 3:30PM. (Please mark this on your

calendar!)
