The priority areas of study for Papua New Guinea are:

Health:

Allied Health (Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Speech Therapy), Health Management, Planning or Research, HIV AIDS, STIs and Sexual Health, Paediatrics, Nursing Management, Oncology, Age Care Nursing, Pathology, Radiography, Laboratory Science, Biomedical Engineering, Sonography.

Transport:

Aviation: (non-flying), Airport Management, Security and Emergency, Air Worthiness Inspection and Certification.

Infrastructure: Civil or Maintenance airports, ports, roads.

Road Safety: data collection and analysis, black spot audit, management and infrastructure design.

Land Development:

Regional and Town Planning, Cartography.

Rural Development:

Veterinary Science, Animal Science and Husbandry.

Research and Technology:

Data Management and Analysis, Actuarial Studies.

Education:

Curriculum Development and Teaching Methodologies (Basic, Secondary, TVET, Higher Education), Education Policy and Development, Specialist Teaching (Disabilities), Student Guidance and Counselling, Teacher Education for Higher Education, Research or Teaching Research, Quality Assurance and Accreditation.

Urban Development:

Infrastructure Planning and Design, Regional and Town Planning.

Law and Justice:

Public Prosecutions, Anti-Corruption, Legislative/ Administrative Review and Investigations, Conflict Prevention, Resolution, Peace, Security and Public Law.

Governance and Public Sector Management:

Public Policy, Planning and Research, Policy Analysis, Public Administration, Environmental Management, Public Sector Systems and Service Delivery (Management, Accounting, Audit and Implementation), Tourism Promotion, Sustainable Development.

Research and Technology:

Economic and Social/Demography Survey, Statistical and Performance Reporting, Data Management and Analysis, Monitoring and Evaluation.

Cross Cutting Fields of Study:

Disability, Disability Studies and Teacher Training (Disability specialisation), Gender, and Family and Sexual Violence.

Areas of Study available under all Priority Sectors:

Approximately 70 per cent of awards are offered to the Open category with 30 per cent offered to the Public category.

Awards are equally distributed between men and women.

Australia Awards Benefits

Australia Awards Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian education institution, including any preparatory training.

Scholarship benefits include:

• return air travel

• one off establishment allowance on arrival

• full tuition fees

• contribution to living expenses

• introductory academic program

• OSHC (overseas student health cover) for the duration of the scholarship

• supplementary academic support and

• fieldwork allowance (for research students only).

Eligibility criteria

Australia Awards Scholarships applicants must meet all eligibility requirements detailed in the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook, available at:

Special conditions

In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, Public category candidates from Papua New Guinea must also meet a range of the Papua New Guinea Department of Personnel Management requirements including:

•  be employed in a public sector agency for two years; and

•  be nominated by your employment agency and endorsed by the Department of Personnel Management.

Papua New Guinea Public Sector applicants should familiarise themselves with General Order, No. 6 available from the Department of Personnel Management’s website www.dpm.gov.pg .

Hardcopy applications

Applications will be made available through the following agencies:

1.  Department of Personal Management – who will send through to all Provincial Administrations.

2.  National Training Council.

3.  Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade co-located offices in designated provincial administrations.

Hardcopy applications are not encouraged.

Applicants must submit with their application all of the relevant supporting documents as listed in the Australia Awards Scholarships Policy Handbook.

The selection process

Following eligibility and compliance checking, applications will be processed. The selection process will include an interview. Applicants will be assessed against the following criteria:

•  Academic competence.

•  Potential outcome, including contribution to development outcomes in your home country.

•  Professional and personal leadership attributes.

Preparatory training

•  All successful applicants will be required to attend a
pre-departure briefing.

•  You may be required to complete the following preparatory training and/or testing:

i)  IELTS-International English Language Testing System to assess English language competence.

ii)  Basic computer skills training.

Outcomes

It is anticipated that applicants will receive notification as to whether they have successfully progressed to the next stage by the end of May 2015 and that that the outcomes of the selection process will be published in the Papua New Guinea National press in late July, 2015.

Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships

The program supports people from select Pacific countries, including Papua New Guineans, to study in Papua New Guinea. Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships for Papua New Guineans are currently focused on the health and education sectors. Papua New Guineans from rural areas are particularly encouraged to apply.
