Job Description / Outline
Supervisor:Chief Operating Officer
A primary function of this and every other job at the “J” is to ensure by whatever rational and legal means necessary that each member, guest and visitor leaves the “J” feeling just a little better than when they arrived.
Position Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Director of Arts & Culture is responsible for the management of departmental growth and daily operations which include the following:
- Program development: enhance the quality of current programs; develop/find new innovative arts programming(emphasis on Jewish values, customs, and expression will be critical to sustained success);
- Volunteer and committee development: cultivate relationships with current lay leaders and recruitnew leadershipfor “less-developed” programs;
- Outreach: discovernew target markets, improve attendance, develop systems fortracking participants;
- Collaborative partnership development: increaseagency collaborations,ability to recognize cultural opportunities and maximize their potential; serve as an integral member of the agency’s Management Team;
- Financial development and budgeting:develop and manage budget; ongoing department and program financial analysis; pursue grant opportunities as appropriate;
- Marketing: program promotion to both internal and external audiences;
- Strategic planning: work with department leadership and JCC administration to set direction and tone for department.
Programs currently within Arts & Culture department and under the supervision and direction of this position include:
- Tucson International Jewish Film Festival: afilm festival with special showings throughout the year, attracting thousands of film-goers annually for over 18 years;
- Sculpture Garden: a new outdoor “park” with a four-fold purpose in mind: • to feature public spaces that celebrate the appreciation of sculpture; • to create an atmosphere of tranquility; • to promote educational opportunities; • and to enhance community fellowship. In addition to the TJCC permanent collection and long-term loans of sculpture, an annual juried sculpture exhibition is designed to present works by local, national and international sculptors.
- Art Gallery & Studio: a multi-use gallery attracting artists to show their fine art, crafts, and sculpture as well as program exhibits rotating every 4-6 weeks; and a well-appointed art studio used for classes, rentals and in-house programming;
- Jewish Author Series: hosting local and national Jewish authors for lectures, book-signing events and workshops throughout the season;
- Additional arts programs in which the JCC participates may include theatre, dance, concerts, and JCC Maccabi ArtsFest;
- Other duties as may, from time to time, be assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Five or more years experience in cultural arts or related program development;
- Sound organizational skills with the ability to set priorities, manage time, problem solve, and be detail oriented with thorough follow-through;
- Excellentcommunication skills and volunteer management that spans internal and external markets;
- Experience in the creation, implementation, and management of event and departmentalbudgets;
- Ability to build community through collaborations;ability to outreach and network across cultural and ethnic groups;
- Strong Judaic knowledge and arts background; knowledge of local arts community a plus;
- Master’s degree preferred.
This position is a full-time/exempt position and is covered by the Code of Personnel Practices.
