What is Hot Seat? Hot Seat follows a similar format to a talk show, but there is more audience participation and interaction with the guests. For this activity, there will be a host who guides the “show” along. The following guests will be on tomorrow’s show:

The Host

The role of the host is to conduct the show and make sure that things run smoothly. The first responsibility of the host is to come up with a name for the talk show and a name for him/herself (it can be your own name or you can be a completely different character). Before the Q&A session with the guests, the host needs to have a short introduction. You might introduce the show, topic, etc. The next step will then be to introduce the guests and direct the questions and draw in audience participation and interaction with the guests. As the host, you will be responsible for calling on the audience. At the end of the show, make sure to have some type of closure.

The Guests

All guests will need to act in character according to the story. You should be prepared to answer any question that the audience presents. Keep in mind that if specific details are asked, you need to follow the story. Also, bring in one item that connects you with the character, such as a piece of clothing the character would wear or an item they might have.

Each person, minus the host, will need to come up with at least two open-end questions for each guest listed above. Open-end questions should be thought provoking and insightful. You might ask the following of Daisy, “What is the ‘too much’ that Gatsby wants of you?” Although the questions should be insightful, they may have some humor and less seriousness than others. Prior to the start of the show, I will check that each audience member has at least twenty questions ready.
