COMMANDER DAVID R. SWATHWOOD

UNITED STATES NAVY (Retired)

Commander Swathwood was born in Imperial Beach, California on March 24, 1961. He graduated from the University of California, San Diego in 1984 with a Bachelor of Arts in Applied Mathematics. Upon completion of Aviation Officer Candidate School in 1985 he was commissioned an Ensign in Pensacola, Florida and was assigned to flight training. He was designated a Naval Aviator on the 26th of September 1986 in Kingsville Texas.

Commander Swathwood then reported VS-41 for initial training in the S-3A “Viking”, upon completing training he reported to the Dragonfires of VS-29 in March of 1988. During his tour with the Dragonfires he made two deployments to the western Pacific and Indian Oceans while onboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70) in support of operation Earnest Will. His assignments included Landing Signal Officer (LSO) Safety Officer and NATOPS Officer.

In November of 1990, Commander Swathwood reported to VT-26 in Beeville, Texas as an intermediate strike flight instructor in the T-2C “Buckeye”. He served as a training LSO and Chief of Naval Air Training Carrier Qualification stage head.

Commander Swathwood next reported to VS-27 in Jacksonville, Florida for refresher training in the S-3B aircraft and upon completion he reported to Fleet Air Reconnaissance Squadron SIX (VQ-6) for training and employment of the ES-3A “Shadow”. During his tour with the “Black Ravens” he deployed onboard USS George Washington (CVN-73) to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf in support of operations Deny Flight and Southern Watch. His assignments included LSO, Safety Officer, Detachment Operations and Squadron Operations Officer.

In July 1995 he was assigned the Sea Control Wing U. S. Atlantic Fleet as the Wing Safety Officer and Atlantic Fleet ES-3A NATOPS Evaluator.

In 1997 Commander Swathwood returned to VQ-6 for assignment as the Operations Officer and Detachment “Charlie” Officer in Charge onboard USS John C. Stennis in support of Operation Southern Watch.

With the disestablishment of the ES-3A in 1999, Commander Swathwood was assigned the Chief of Naval Air Training in Corpus Christi, Texas as the Training Systems Development Officer and Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Ops and Training as well as a flight instructor in the T-45A “Goshawk”.

In August of 2000 Commander Swathwood reported to Vance AFB in Enid, Oklahoma as the Operations/ Executive Officer of the 8th Flying Training Squadron flying the T-37 aircraft. In March of 2002 he assumed command and served as the Commanding Officer until his transfer in May of 2003.

He was then assigned to the Air Department onboard the USS John C. Stennis where he served as Assistant Air Officer (“Mini Boss”) and Air Officer (“Air Boss).

CDR Swathwood next served as the Executive Assistant to the Commander Navy Region Southeast. He transferred in September of 2006 to US Central Command as a strategic analyst until he retired in July of 2008. He is currently the Senior Naval Science Instructor at Eldorado High School in Las Vegas Nevada.

Commander Swathwood is entitled to wear the Defense Meritorious Service Medal,Meritorious Service Medal, Strike/Flight Air Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal and various campaign and service medals and awards. He has accumulated over 3950 hours and 559 carrier landings

Commander Swathwood is married to the former DaraIsmay of Imperial Beach, California. They have two sons David Jr. and Shane.
