Biblical Survey Series – 2 Kings
TEXT: The entire book of 2 Kings.
THEME: The success of any kingdom is dependant on it’s allegiance to God. (1 Kg. 9:4 – 9)
INTRO: This book is a history of the Kings of a dividedKingdom. The books of 1 and 2 Kings were originally one book written by Jeremiah around 550 B.C. Jewish tradition says.
- The Divided Kingdom, 1:1 – 17:41.
- King Ahaziah in Israel.(1:1 – 18) (853-852 / Yahweh holds or sustains)
- Ahaziah fell from an upper floor and Elijah sent word that he would die.
- Ahaziah sent 50 soldiers after Elijah but he prayed and God killed them.
-Elijah prayed for fire to come from heaven and consume them.
- Ahaziah sent another 50 and the same thing happened.
- Ahaziah sent another 50 and Elijah went with them.
-Elijah repeated his prediction and Ahaziah died.
- The changing of the Prophets; Elijah departs and Elisha takes over. (2:12 – 25)
- Elijah is translated into heaven. (2:1 – 11)
- Elijah told Elisha to stay behind in Gilgal while he went on to Bethel but he would not.
- Elijah told Elisha to stay behind in Bethel while he went on to Jericho but he would not.
- Elijah told Elisha to stay behind in Jericho while he went on to Jordan but he would not.
- At the Jordan Elijah separated the waters with his mantle then walked across with Elisha.
- Elijah asked Elisha what he wanted and Elisha replied a double portion of his spirit.
- Elijah replied that if he saw him go up in the whirlwind then he would have it.
- A chariot of fire separated the two of them and Elijah was taken up and Elisha saw it.
- Elisha’s ministry begins. (12 – 25)
- Elisha took Elijah’s mantle and hit the waters and they parted as before.
- 50 sons of the prophets asked Elisha to go look for the body of Elijah and he said no.
- When they began to shame him he let them go but they did not find anything.
- Elisha went up to Bethel and children came out and made fun of his bald head.
- Elisha cursed them and 2 she bears came out and hurt 42 of the kids.
- King Jehoram (Joram) in Israel. (3:1 – 8:15) (852-841 / Yahweh is high)
- Jehoram’s expedition against Moab. (3:1 – 27)
- The kings of Israel, Judah and Edom went to battle with Moab.
- While on the seventh day of their journey to Moab they could find no water.
- They sought out the prophet Elisha for aid.
- Elisha prayed a valley to be filled with water and it was.
- The Moabite saw the water and it looked to them as blood.
- The Moabites attached and were routed.
- Elisha’s ministry. (4:1 – 8:15)
- Elisha helps a widow. (4:1 – 7)
-A widow was in debt to a creditor and had no way to repay.
-Elisha told her to borrow as many jars as she could and pour the oil that she had in the jars and sell it to pay the debt.
-Elisha multiplied the oil to fill all of the jars to help the widow.
- Elisha and the Shunammite woman. (8 – 37)
-A Shunammite woman and her husband built a room for Elisha to stay in as he traveled by their way.
-He asked if he could do something for them but they said no.
-Elisha’s servant said they were childless so Elisha told her she would have a son by next year.
-The son was born and grew and hit his head and died.
-The woman sent for Elisha who raised him from the dead upon coming back to life the boy sneezed 7 times.
- Elisha at Gilgal. (38 – 44)
-Elisha provided food for the sons of the prophets to eat.
-When one man put poisoned berries in a soup by mistake Elisha added meal to it to make it edible.
- Elisha and Naaman the leper. (5:1 – 27)
-A little servant girl told Naaman’s wife of a prophet in Israel who could heal.
-Naaman went to the king of Israel but he could not help.
-Elisha sent word to send Naaman to him.
-When Naaman arrived Elisha would not come to the door but told him to wash in the Jordan River 7 times and he would be clean.
-After Naaman was healed he offered to pay Elisha but he refused.
-After Naaman started back to Syria Elisha’s servant caught up with him and asked for silver and clothes which Naaman gave him.
-When Elisha found out this deception the servant became leprous.
- Elisha recovers the ax head. (6:1 – 7)
-The sons of the prophets were building more housing and one lost the ax head he borrowed to chop with in the water.
-Elisha put a stick in the water and the ax floated to the top and was recovered.
- Elisha stops Syria. (6:8 – 8:6)
-The king of Syria after being defeated many times by Israel sent an army of men after Elisha the Prophet.
-The Syrian army surrounded them and Elisha prayed for the Lord to blind them which he did.
-Elisha lead the blinded army into the hands of Israel then prayed for the Lord to open their eyes which he did.
-There was a famine in the land and the people had reverted to cannibalism.
-Elisha predicted that the next day people would have food.
-4 Lepers outside of the city decided they were going to die anyway so they went into the camp of the Syrians.
-The Syrians had fled in the night after hearing the sound of chariots and horses.
-The lepers found the food and told the Israelites who came and gathered it.
- Elisha in Damascus. (7 – 15)
-The king of Syria was sick and sent his servant to Elisha to see if he would recover.
-Elisha told the servant that he would recover but that he would die at his hand.
-The servant told the king he would recover and when he was asleep the servant suffocated him.
- King Jehoram (Joram) in Judah.(16 – 24) (848-841 / Yahweh is high)
- He was 32 when he began to reign and reigned 8 years and died.
- He was an evil king and Edom and Libnah revolted under his reign.
- King Ahaziah in Judah.(25 – 29)(841 / Yahweh holds or sustains)
- He was 22 when he began to reign and reigned 1 year and died.
- He was an evil king.
- King Jehu in Israel.(9:1 – 10:36)(841-814 / Yahweh is He)
- Jehu is anointed by Elisha’s servant. (9:1 – 10)
- Jehu defeats Jehoram of Israel. (9:11 – 10:17)
- Jehu goes after Jehoram and shoots him in the heart with an arrow as he is trying to flee.
- Jehu goes to kill Jezebel and has eunuchs throw her out the window where he then ran over her with his horses.
- Jehu killed all 70 of Ahab’s sons as well.
- Jehu destroys Baal worshipers. (18 – 36)
a. Jehu made the Baal worshipers believe he was going to have a great feast to Baal but they all gathered in one place his men killed them.
- King Athaliah in Judah.(11:1 – 16)(841-835 / whom Yahweh has afflicted)
- Athaliah killed all who could make a claim to the throne by blood.
- A servant hid one boy in the temple for six years without detection.
- On the seventh year of Joash they crowned him king and killed Athaliah.
- King Jehoash (Joash) in Judah.(11:17 – 12:21)(835-796 / Yahweh has bestowed)
- Joash had the Temple rebuilt and refurbished.
- The servants of Joash conspired and killed him.
- King Jehoahaz in Israel.(13:1 – 9)(814-798 / Yahweh has grasped)
- He was an evil king and reigned 17 years.
- King Jehoash (Joash) in Judah.(10 – 25)(798-782 / Yahweh has bestowed)
- Elisha was about to die when Joash came to mourn for him.
- Elisha told Joash to take an arrow and shoot it out the window toward the East and that God would deliver Judah from the Syrians.
- Elisha had Joash take arrows and beat them on the groundAaqaqaa2/
- Joash did so 3 times and Elisha told him that is how many times he shall overcome Syria.
- Elisha dies and they bury him.
- When another man was being buried where Elisha was the man was revived back to life when he touched the body of Elisha.
- King Amaziah in Judah.(14:1 – 22)(796-767 / Yahweh is mighty)
- Amaziah defeated Edom and called for the king of Israel to fight.
- When Israel came to fight they defeated Judah and took their gold.
- King Jeroboam II in Israel.(23 – 29)(794-753 / he pleads the peoples cause)
- He was an evil king and reigned for 41 years.
- King Azariah (Uzziah) in Judah.(15:1 – 7)(790-739 / Yahweh has helped)
1. He came to the throne at 16 was a leper and reigned 52 years.
- King Zechariah in Israel.(8 – 12)(753 / Yahweh is renowned)
- He was an evil king that reigned 6 months and was assassinated by Shallum his friend in public.
- King Shallum in Israel.(13 – 15)(752 / the requited one)
- He reigned 1 month and was killed by Menahem who claimed the throne.
- King Menahem in Israel.(16 – 22)(752-742 / one who comforts)
- He was an evil king that reigned 10 years then died.
- He paid the king of Assyria 1,000 talents of silver to keep from war.
- King Pekahiah in Israel.(23 – 26)(742-740 / Yahweh hath opened the eyes)
- He was the son of Menahem and was also evil and reigned 2 years.
- He was killed by one of his captains, Pekah, and some men.
- King Pekah in Israel.(27 – 31)(752-732 / opening of the eyes)
- He was an evil king who reigned 20 years and was killed by his friend Hoshea.
- King Jotham in Judah.(32 – 38)(750-731 / Yahweh is perfect)
- He was a good king, the son of Uzziah, who reigned 16 years then died.
- King Ahaz in Judah.(16:1 – 20)(731-715 / he has grasped)
- He was an evil king who reigned 16 years and sacrificed his son to Molech a pagan god.
- He paid the king of Assyria to protect him from the Syrians and the king of Israelwith the gold and silver from God’s house.
- He broke up the furniture in God’s house to use the metal to pay the tribute.
- King Hoshea in Israel.(17:1 – 41)(732-722 / salvation)
- He was an evil king that served “So” the king of Assyria until he was thrown in prison for conspiracy. (1 – 6)
- The people ofIsrael rejected God and secretly served idols. (7 – 23)
- The beginning of the mixed race of Samaritans. (24 – 41)
- The king of Assyria carried away some of the Jews out of Samaria when he overtook it.
- The king then brought in people from other Assyrian areas to repopulate the area of Samaria.
- These imports intermarried with the Jews and created the mixed race of the Samarians.
- The Surviving Kingdom of Judah, 18:1 – 25:30.
- King Hezekiah in Judah. (18:1 – 20:21)(715-686 / Yahweh has strengthened)
- He was a righteous king who destroyed all of the idols and places of false worship, including the bronze serpent made by Moses. (18:1 – 12)
- The serpent also had become an idol.
- His deliverance from Sennacherib’s invasions. (18:13 – 19:37)
- Hezekiah first avoided defeat by paying tribute money to the king of Assyria as other kings had done.
- An Assyrian army came to the city to bargain with Hezekiah and to shame the people into surrendering.
-The captain boasted that the gods of the other nations were not able to stop the Assyrian army and neither could the God of the Jews.
- Hezekiah Prays to God for deliverance and God kills 185,000 soldiers in their sleep and the Assyrians leave.
- Hezekiah became sick and was going to die but he prayed to the Lord and the Lord granted him another 15 years of life. (20:1 – 11)
- He asked for a sign of Gods promise and the shadow of a sundial went backward 10 degrees instead of forward.
- Hezekiah showed the visiting Babylonians all of the treasures of the land and the Prophet Isaiah rebuked him for being foolish. (12 – 21)
- King Manasseh in Judah. (21:1 – 18)(695-642 / causing to forget)
- Was the longest ruling and most evil king Judah ever had.
- Not only did he set the places of false worship back up but he encouraged other nations to forsake the Lord and also killed Isaiah the Prophet.
- King Amon in Judah. (19 – 26)(642-640 / same as Egyptian deity No)
- Amon was the son of Manasseh and was an evil king who was killed by his own servants in his own house.
- King Josiah in Judah. (22:1 – 23:30)(640-609 / Yahweh supports him)
- He was a good king who had the Temple repaired. (22:1 – 7)
- During the renovation of the Temple a book of the law was found and given to Josiah who grieved over his nation’s sin. (8 – 20)
- He renews the covenant with the Lord and vows to serve Him. (23:1 – 3)
- He reforms the nation. (4 – 30)
- He destroys the idols and false priests.
- He commanded the false worship to be stopped.
- He reinstituted the Passover Feast.
- Josiah was killed fighting his enemies.
- King Jehoahaz in Judah. (31 – 33)(609 / Yahweh has grasped)
- This Josiah’s oldest son but an evil king that Pharaoh imprisoned then put the land to tribute.
- King Jehoiakim (Eliakim) in Judah.(23:34 – 24:7)(609-597 / Yahweh will establish)
- He also was Josiah’s son also an evil king but Pharaoh let him rule Judah.
- When Babylon overtook Egypt Jehoiakim rebelled after 3 years and was killed.
- King Jehoiachin in Judah. (8 – 16)(597 / Yahweh will uphold)
- This was Jehoiakim’s son which only reigned 3 months before the great Babylonian captivity took place and he was put in a Babylonian prison.
- King Zedekiah (Mattaniah) in Judah.(24:17-25:21)(597-586 / Yahweh my righteousness)
- This was Josiah’s other son who rebelled against Babylon and they caught him, killed his children then put out his eyes after which they burntTemple to the ground. (24:17 – 25:10)
- The general ofBabylon’s army took all of the riches and a lot of the people from Jerusalem to Babylon where some were killed. (11 – 21)
- Governor Gedaliah in Judah. (22 – 26)(586 / Yahweh is great)
- Gedaliah was placed there by the Babylonian King but was killed by people of the land.
- Jehoiachin’s release in Babylon. (27 – 30)
- He was released from prison and cared for by the great king of the Babylonians whose name was Nebuchadnezzar.
