Proposal for evaluation committee and chair of defence in connection with

PhD examination at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Oslo

The basic unit proposes the composition of the evaluation committee. The principal supervisor submits the proposal on behalf of the academic community. The form should be sent to:

The Faculty of Medicine, Research Support, P.O. Box 1078 Blindern, NO-0316 Oslo, Norway.

At least three members should sit on the committee and shall normally be composed so that:

·  both genders are represented

·  at least one of the members has no association with the University of Oslo

·  at least one of the members has no association with Norwegian institutions

·  all members have a doctoral degree or equivalent academic qualifications

·  one of the committee members must be employed at the Faculty of Medicine, UiO

·  the candidate’s co-author(s) and/or previous and current supervisor(s) cannot sit on the committee

·  committee members should normally not have had any joint works with the candidate’s supervisors during the past 5 years.

Information about the committee composition is found under § 13 of the Regulations and the Supplementary rules pertaining to the Regulations. Specific reasons must be supplied if the criteria for the committee composition are not complied with.

The proposed committee members must be informed of the proposal and be prepared to sit on the committee. In addition they must meet the Public Administration Act’s requirements of impartiality. A signed declaration of impartiality form from each proposed committee member must be enclosed with this proposal for evaluation committee.

Setting a final date for trial lecture and disputation cannot be done before the committee’s report has been approved by the dean.

Any suggested dates for trial lecture and disputation are not binding for the Faculty of Medicine. Date for trial lecture and disputation is set by the Faculty. Note that according to the rules the trial lecture and disputation can at the earliest take place six weeks after the Faculty has found the thesis worthy of defence. If the Faculty finds a thesis worthy of defence before July another four weeks will be added due to the summer holidays, and the total time will be 10 weeks. The reason why this is done is because experience has shown that it is difficult to print theses and book venues for PhD examinations during the holidays.

The supervisor must suggest two people who are prepared to act as chair of the defence. The chair of the defence should be employed at the Faculty of Medicine as professor, associate professor or professor emeritus, but can not belong to the same department as the candidate or supervisor. The supervisor has a duty to inform the chair of the defence of the date for the public defence once it has been approved by the Dean.

The Faculty will use the contact information below for sending off both thesis and information. It will also be used by the committee members themselves. Please make sure that the information is correct. Incomplete application is returned.
