Dear Prospective Mentor:

A North Buncombe High School senior has suggested you as a Graduation Project (GP) Mentor. Before you make a decision, you might like to know a little more about the Graduation Project and the responsibilities of a supervisor.

The purpose of North Carolina Graduation Project is to provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge they have gained and the maturity they have achieved during their high school career. It consists of four parts: 1) a research paper; 2) a practical experience representing at least 10 hours of work; 3) a portfolio; and 4) a presentation to a panel of community members and school staff.

As a Mentor, it will be your primary responsibility to

❑advise the student on the Practical Experience portion of the Graduation Project (a minimum of 3 hours and 3 contacts learning, making, doing something with a goal in mind).

❑monitor his or her Practical Experience progress through to completion.

❑meet with the student throughout the semester or summer until the Experience has been completed and the student’s goals have been met.

❑evaluate the student’s progress on the Mentor Verification Form you will receive later.

❑inform the GP Coordinator if you have any concerns (Teacher’s Email Address).

It is the student’s responsibility, not the Mentor’s, to make arrangements for the meetings. One of the goals of the GP is to teach students about responsibility. In that respect, please remember that your purpose is a guide. If the student makes poor choices as far as keeping up with deadlines, completing the Practical Experience with good attention to detail, or failing to arrange meetings, please know that you will be expected to note that in the evaluation.

In addition, the student’s teacher will be providing to the student a Deadline Overview. Meeting all deadlines is vital to the success of any project, the GP is no exception. Please help us by keeping track of your students’s progress. This Deadline Overview will also be available on the NBHS Website.

Although serving as a Mentor will take some of your time, we believe it can be a rewarding experience for both you and the student. If you are comfortable with the requirements of being a Graduation Project Mentor, please return the attached form to the student who has contacted you. If you have any questions about the Graduation Project process, please call me at ###-#### or email me at ______.. Thank you for considering supervising this student.

Sincerely
