Welcome to Cst. Donovan – ‘The Internet Safety’
Cst. Lindsey Donovan started with the RCMP in 2007. Originally from Winnipeg, he was given his first post in New Minas, NS where he worked for seven and a half years as a General Duty and First Nation’s Policing Officer. In 2015, he was transferred to the Nova Scotia Internet Child Exploitation Unit in the RCMP Headquarters in Dartmouth, where he still works. Lindsey has fond memories of being a Scout himself.
Welcome George Mawko – ‘Facilitating STEM Adventures’
This is a hands-on presentation that aims to foster basic skills relating to facilitating youth-led STEM field activities. STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) based activities can be used as a powerful tool to introduce youth to and help develop necessary 21st century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, technology literacy and collaboration.
Welcome HeatherUhl – ‘Duke of Edinburgh Award’
The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award for youth between 14 and 24 years old to challenge themselves based on their interests and abilities. Duke Awards can be earned in conjunction with the top section awards in Scouting. The Duke Award and the Scouting movement have enjoyed a close relationship over the years that can be rejuvenated in Nova Scotia with the Canadian Path.
Welcome Daniel Fay – ‘Recruitment, how to engage parents, grow your leadership team and retain youth’
In this interactive session we discuss and share best practices on techniques being used to strengthen our section leadership teams. While still a partnership, the roles of Scouter and youth have changed with the Canadian Path. Parent engagement strengthens that team with access to new knowledge and skills. By successfully engaging all three elements of our leadership team, we create a long-term ownership and commitment to our section’s program.
Welcome Don Connors – ‘Badge Trading’
Have you ever spotted a unique badge or crest at an event? Have you ever thought “I wish I had one of those badges.” What would you have done with it if you had one? The Canadian Badgers Club might be able to help you. Trading is fun.
Welcome Dan Godin – ‘Scouter’s Burnout’
“Volunteers come to us to do great work. They don’t volunteer to do bad work.” Volunteer support is one of the 5 priorities of Scouts Canada. During this session, we will discuss the signs and causes of Scouter Burnout, solutions and tips to avoid it and discuss overall Volunteer Support in Scouting.

Welcome Trevor Arnason, Public Health and Preventive Medicine Physician Specialist, as well as a Family Doctor – ‘Ticks and Lyme Disease’
Blacklegged ticks (xodesscapularis) have established populations in a growing number of areas through Nova Scotia and it is anticipated they will continue to expand their range due to climate change. These ticks carry several diseases that can be transmitted to humans, but are most notable as the vector for Lyme disease which is on the rise in Nova Scotia. This presentation will highlight the simple ways that tick bites can be prevented and managed, as well as, how Lyme disease can be identified and treated to prevent complications.

Safe Scouting – Associate Director of Safe Scouting, Stephen Greensides, will introduce you to the Safe Scouting team and the work they do to drive Scouts Canada’s key strategic objective of Safety Leadership. Steve will discuss safety incidents and trends, matters of youth protection and how we can take action to ensure Scouts Canada remains a leader in youth safety and protection.
Welcome Peter Comeau and Linda Boone ‘Discussion on Next Local Jamobree’
Continuing on the momentum of a successful ScotiaJamb 2015 and CJ’17, it is time to start thinking of our next great adventure. Discussions are underway about hosting another Jamboeee at Camp Nedooae in the not so distant future.
Come and participate in a session where you can share your thoughts and help provide some grass roots input that will be used to begin the planning for our next local Jamboree Adventure.
