RE:Spring 2018

  1. Activities (District, Committee or Member)
  • Regional Representatives selected SSIG Liaisons for their respective regions. We have a total of 20 SSIG Liaisons from 20 different PT and PTA programs across New York.
  • SSIG Executive Board and Advisory Panel have met monthly; Board of Representatives has met twice with Executive Board and once separately
  • SSIG Mini-retreat was held on 3/19/18 and including leadership and professional goal development activities and workshops. SPEAR provided their facilities and pizza lunch for this event. The retreat was very successful and facilitated officer bonding, teamwork, and goal development.
  • The following regional events have been organized and led by SSIG officers and Liaisons
  • LIU PT Pub Night on National and State Advocacy
  • Touro College Advocacy Night
  • D’Youville College National and State Advocacy Dinner
  • Stony Brook University PT Pub Night on National and State Advocacy
  • Columbia University National Advocacy Dinner
  • Student Loan Workshop at Hunter College
  1. Current Issues and Concerns (District, Committee, or Member)
  • Our Communications Chair resigned and we have voted on and inducted a new Communications Chair. We are documenting our process of transitioning officers mid-term so we can propose an addition to our Procedure Manual for next year.
  • We are finalizing our budget for this year with help from NYPTA EC and beginning to consider our motion to 2019 Delegate Assembly that will enable future funds for the SSIG.
  • First SSIG Annual Conference will be held at Hunter College on September 29, 2018. We are currently polling students on session topics of interest, finalizing the timeline, and finding speakers and sponsors.
  • Most upstate officers were unable to attend our in-person retreat due to cost, and had to call in via conference call software. We are considering having the meeting in two locations next year to facilitate more in-person participation.
  • An ongoing challenge is how to communicate with our Board of Representatives. We are continuing to experiment with strategies that enable clarity, efficiency, and collaboration throughout the year.
  • We will work with Gloria Baker to edit our Webpage on NYPTA website.
  • We would like to have a SSIG banner, maybe multiple, but are not sure where we should store these materials for easy access.
  • We would like to promote more PTA student participation and are speaking with David Faccini, NYPTA PTA Committee Chair, for ideas.
  • We are teaching students how to use the APTA Action App to send letters to legislators and participate in PT Advocacy.
