Standard: 1.NBT.B.3 Compare two two-digit numbers based on meanings of the tens and ones digits, recording the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, and <.
Purpose/Big Idea:Comparing two two-digit numbers using symbols <, >, =.
Materials:
- Two number cubes (dice)
- Resource Sheet 4: Tens and Ones Place Value Mat (one copy for each student)
- Digi-Blocks or base ten blocks
- Resource Sheet 8: Dicing it Up With Tens and Ones Direction Sheet
- Resource Sheet9: Dicing it Up With Tens and OnesRecording Sheet
- Resource Sheet10: Hundred Chart
Activity: Dicing It Up With Tens and Ones
- Player 1 rolls two number cubes (dice). Player 1 builds a number on the place-value mat using the two numbers rolled on the number cubes. For example, if the player rolls a 3 and a 6, she may build either 36 or 63.
- Player 2 rolls two number cubesand builds the number on his place value mat.
- Each player records both players’ numbers on their recording sheets.
- Each player compares the two numbers by writing in the correct symbol: <, >, =.
- Repeat the previous steps as many times as needed.
Guiding Questions:
- Discuss the value of the numbers using <, >, =.
- How did you know which number was greater? Less?
- How many more tens does the larger number have?
- How many more ones does the larger number have?
- Compare your number to your partner’s number. How many more/less do you have? (Have a hundred chart available)
- Think about the number ____. What is one less than this number? What is ten less? (Have a hundred chart available)
- How many tens are there in the number __? How could you find out?
