Chemistry 11 AP is designed to continue and build upon the information introduced in the Chemistry unit of Science 10. Students will be encouraged to develop appropriate study skills, attitudes and behaviors. To be successful in Chemistry, it is important for you to learn, understand and apply basic skills and concepts.
To gain an understanding of Chemistry and get the full benefit from this course, you must devote the time necessary to learn sound study skills. If a topic looks familiar, do not think there is no sense in studying. Familiarity is not the same thing as knowing. Review each concept carefully and in detail, getting extra-help when needed.
Topics Covered In Chemistry 11AP:
Review:· Nomenclature
· Types of Reactions & Balancing – predicting products (new)
· Periodic Table & Arrangement (analyzing)
· Sub-atomic particle (p+, e-, n0)
· Bohr Models
· Electron Configurations (new) / From Structure to Properties (Bonding):
· Trends in the Periodic Table
· Properties of Ionic and Molecular Compounds and Metallic substances
· Classifying compounds
· Bonding and bond energies
· Structural models of bonding (VSEPR)
· Polar and pure covalent bonding
Stoichiometry:
· The Mole and Molar Mass
· Calculations and Chemical Equations
· Stoichiometric Experiments
· Applications of Stoichiometry
· Gases & stoichiometry / Organic Chemistry:
· Introduction to Organic Chemistry
· Classifying Compounds
· Naming and Writing Organic Compounds
· Applications of Organic Chemistry
· Environmental Impact of Organic Chemistry
Evaluation: (each unit will have tests, quizzes, assignments, and labs)
Review Unit 5%
Bonding Unit 20%
Stoichiometry Unit 25%
Organic Chemistry 15%
Project 10%
Final Exam 25%
Labs:
Students will be required to keep a lab “binder”. This lab binder will contain a Table of Contents (showing date of lab and page numbers) and all labs, including pre-lab calculations/research, informal and formal reports that we have done throughout the year. This will be collected and evaluated twice per semester. This will be assessed as a complete or incomplete. Students will have the opportunity to resubmit the lab binder. This binder will also be of use in Chemistry 12AP should students continue into that course.
Projects:
In this course students will conduct research (with teacher consultation) to address an issue/idea in Chemistry. There will be two components to the project: literary research (articles, books, websites etc.) and a final report on your findings. The total value is 10% of your grade. More information will follow.
Expectations of Students:
Students are expected to be on time and prepared for class. A binder (with lots of paper)/scribbler, writing utensils (a few colors will help), a scientific calculator, eraser, ruler, graph paper and the textbook are all the supplies needed for this class.
When in the lab students are responsible for the lab table and all materials assigned to them. Should something be broken, notify the teacher for proper cleanup. If carelessness continues, students may be billed for broken lab equipment.
This is a fast paced course and students must keep up with the theory and problem solving involved on a daily basis by taking notes and keeping on top of homework.
Test and quizzes are to be written only on the assigned days. If a test or quiz is missed, then a written reason for the absence from a parent/guardian is needed to be exempt or have a re-write. If no excuse is provided then the test or quiz will receive a zero. In each unit we will have at least one test and quiz.
Each unit has a list of mandated outcomes. To access these outcomes, please visit the website.
Textbook:
Students will be responsible for a textbook. If it is not returned at the end of the year, the student shall be responsible for the cost of replacement.
