Epiphany Sunday

THE SERVICE OF THE WORD (p. 38 in the red hymnal)

- WE GATHER TO WORSHIP -

OPENING HYMN: CW #90: “The People that in Darkness Sat”

M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.

C: And also with you.

M: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

C: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child. But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

M: God, our heavenly Father, has forgiven all your sins. By the perfect life and innocent death of our Lord Jesus Christ, he has removed your guilt forever. You are his own dear child. May God give you strength to live according to his will.

C: Amen.

- WE PRAISE THE LORD -

M: In the peace of God’s forgiveness, let us praise the Lord:

C: ♫ (the music is on p. 39 of the hymnal) Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. Your faithfulness continues forever. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

PRAYER OF THE DAY

(ALL) Heavenly Father, you revealed your Son to strangers and foreigners by the guidance of a star. Be merciful to us whom you have also called out of darkness, and lead us by the light of your Word to the full enjoyment of your glory in heaven. We ask this for the sake of our Lord, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. ♫ Amen.

-- WE LISTEN TO THE WORD –

FIRST LESSON: I Samuel 16:1-13
TheLordsaid to Samuel, “How long will you mournfor Saul, since I have rejectedhim as king over Israel? Fill your horn with oiland be on your way; I am sending you to Jesseof Bethlehem. I have chosenone of his sons to be king.”

2But Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”

TheLordsaid, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’3Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will showyou what to do. You are to anointfor me the one I indicate.”

4Samuel did what theLordsaid. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town trembledwhen they met him. They asked, “Do you come in peace?”

5Samuel replied, “Yes, in peace; I have come to sacrifice to theLord. Consecrateyourselves and come to the sacrifice with me.” Then he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.

6When they arrived, Samuel saw Eliaband thought, “Surely theLord’s anointed stands here before theLord.”

7But theLordsaid to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. TheLorddoes not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but theLordlooks at the heart.”

8Then Jesse called Abinadaband had him pass in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “TheLordhas not chosen this one either.”9Jesse then had Shammah pass by, but Samuel said, “Nor has theLordchosen this one.”10Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “TheLordhas not chosen these.”11So he asked Jesse, “Are these allthe sons you have?”

“There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.”

Samuel said, “Send for him; we will not sit down until he arrives.”

12So hesent for him and had him brought in. He was glowing with health and had a fine appearance and handsomefeatures.

Then theLordsaid, “Rise and anoint him; this is the one.”

13So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointedhim in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of theLordcame powerfully upon David.

PSALM OF THE DAY: Psalm 2, page 65 in the hymnal

SECOND LESSON: Ephesians 3:2-12
2Surely you have heard about the administration of God’s grace that was given to mefor you,3that is, the mysterymade known to me by revelation,as I have already written briefly.4In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insightinto the mystery of Christ,5which was not made known to people in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God’s holy apostles and prophets.6This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirstogether with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

7I became a servant of this gospelby the gift of God’s grace given methrough the working of his power.8Although I am less than the least of all the Lord’s people, this grace was given me: to preach to the Gentilesthe boundless riches of Christ,9and to make plain to everyone the administration of this mystery, which for ages past was kept hidden in God, who created all things.10His intent was that now, through the church, the manifold wisdom of Godshould be made knownto the rulers and authoritiesin the heavenly realms,11according to his eternal purposethat he accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord.12In him and through faith in him we may approach Godwith freedom and confidence.

VERSE OF THE DAY: CW #62 vs. 1, “Joy to the World”

GOSPEL: Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi[a]from the east came to Jerusalem2and asked, “Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?We saw his starwhen it rose and have come to worship him.”

3When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.4When he had called together all the people’s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Messiah was to be born.5“In Bethlehemin Judea,” they replied, “for this is what the prophet has written:

6“‘But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,
are by no means least among the rulers of Judah;
for out of you will come a ruler
who will shepherd my people Israel.’[b]”

7Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared.8He sent them to Bethlehem and said, “Go and search carefully for the child. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and worship him.”

9After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was.10When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.11On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.12And having been warnedin a dreamnot to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED:

I believe in God the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,

Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,

was crucified, died, and was buried.

He descended into hell.

The third day he rose again from the dead.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.

From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy Christian church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen.
