Background

Acquiring the ability to speak Spanish within our global society is important for many reasons. Foremost among them is being able to communicate with Spanish-speakers and, in the process, learn about diverse people and thecommunities they inhabit. Utilizing your developing Spanish in real situations in our community is an important piece to this process of developing multicultural proficiencies. This project provides you with various opportunities to use your Spanish in fun and interesting ways while learning about Spanish-speaking cultures through first-hand experiences.

If you like art:70 pts.

Visit a museum exhibition with Spanish-origin art on display. (Photos, 2 pg.analysis of art/experience)

Make an original art project of your own cultural artifact. (i.e. Piñata, papelpicado, mask, calavera… etc.)

Reproduce an intricate artwork (sketch, draw, paint) by a famous Spanish/Latin@ artist. (Artwork on display)

Take an original photograph and write a 12-line poem that relates to it. (Photo, poem)

Create a collage or paint an art piece that illustrates a cultural topic learned in class. (Painting or collage)

If you like to eat or cook: 70 pts.

Visit a restaurant, order food, have conversation about school/free time in Spanish (Video- 15+ sentence in Span)

Make food using a recipe from a Spanish-speaking country. (Photos, Recipe, Food, 1 pg. reflection)

Reproduce your favorite meal from a local Latino restaurant.(Photos, Recipe, Food, 1 pg. reflection)

Research a food item/raw material (i.e. cocoa). (2 pg. essay on origins, use by indigenous/Spanish/modern societies)

Create an original recipe using Latin-based ingredients. (Photos, Recipe, Food, 1 pg. reflection)

If you like “high-tech” technology:70 pts.

Visit a tech museum, introduce yourself, and narrate what you are doing there. (Video, 15+ lines in Span)

Make a music video of your favorite song in Spanish. (Music video of at least 2 minutes, 15+ lines in Span)

Produce a short Spanish film or TV commercial that relates to a cultural topic or reality. (Video, 15+ lines in Span)

Research the technological innovation of a Spanish-speaking country. (2 pg. essay, plus works cited, in English)

Create a multimedia PowerPoint in English expanding upon a cultural topic in class. (8 slides min, each 4 sentences)

If you like to dance or play sports:70 pts.

Watch a televised sporting event in Spanish. (Video of reactions in Span- 10+ lines, 1 pg. Eng. Summary of game)

Attend and film a Ballet Folklórico or other dance style performance. (Video, 2 pg. reflection in English)

Learn to dance flamenco, salsa, tango, merengue, etc. and teach class. (Photos, class demonstration)

Research a country’s popular sport or traditional dance(s). (2 pg. essay- describe style, origins, influences, meaning)

Create a dance routine with friends using a popular Spanish/Latino dance style. (Video- 2 minute presentation)

If you like history or geography:70 pts.

Visit a California mission. (Photos, 2 pg. description of mission, Spanish history, influence on California history)

Make a globe, show Spanish explorers’ routes, Spain’s colonies and key minerals/natural products. (Globe, key)

Produce a characterization of a famous Spanish/Latin@ historical figure. (Video- character monologue 15+ lines in Span)

Report on a current situation (news) of a Span-speaking country. (2 pg. summary of 3 articles on same news topic)

Create a video reenacting the history of a Span-speaking country, from colonization to modern times. (Video, 5 minutes)
