Komen Dallas County Awards More Than $1.8 Million to Local Breast Health Programs
Eleven grant recipients unveiledtoday at second annual Impact Awards Luncheon
DALLAS– (April 4, 2013) – Susan G. Komen Dallas County® has announced the 11 local breast health programs,receiving a total of more than $1.8 million in funding, for the organization’s 2013-14 grant cycle.
The grant recipients, along with Komen Dallas County’s corporate partners, donors and volunteers, were honored today at the Affiliate’s second annual Impact Awards Luncheon, held at Hotel Zaza. The community grants will be used to fund breast cancer education, screening, treatment and support services for uninsured and underinsured Dallas County residents.
“In certain areas of southern Dallas County where we focus much of our outreach, up to 75 percent of women ages 18-64 do not have health insurance,” said Jennifer Legere, executive director of Komen Dallas County. “Our community grants help these women receive access to life-saving breast health services. This would not be possible without the tireless work of our grantees, and we are grateful for all they are doing to fight breast cancer in Dallas County.”
Since it was founded in 1992, Komen Dallas County has invested more than $21 million in Dallas County via annual community grants. The 2013-14 grant recipients and their respective breast health programs are as follows:
- American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society provides support to breast cancer patients in Dallas County by offering transportation to treatment at no cost to uninsured and underinsured patients. Through their network of community resources, American Cancer Society staff helps connect patients with information, emotional support and help with day-to-day needs throughout their breast cancer journey. - Irving Healthcare Foundation
Irving Healthcare Foundation, in partnership with Baylor Medical Center at Irving, Texas Oncology, the Women’s Imaging Center and the Surgical Group of North Texas, is in its second year of a breast health services program for Irving residents to provide educational outreach, charity mammograms, diagnostic testing and breast cancer treatment for low-income women that are uninsured or underinsured. - The Bridge Breast Network
The Bridge Breast Network (BBN) Bridging Breast Healthcare Access is a comprehensive program that includes breast health education, patient navigation, and diagnostic and treatment services for breast cancer to low-income, uninsured and underinsured women, men and adolescents in Dallas County. The BBN strives to reduce the barriers to access and the incidence of late stage breast cancer by providing services for those that have fallen through the cracks in the current healthcare system. - Los Barrios Unidos Community Clinic (LBUCC)
LBUCC will expand upon its breast health efforts, creating a comprehensive, patient-centered breast health program for low-income, predominantly Hispanic female patients. This program will increase the number of no-cost screenings for female patients age 40-64 and the number of
no-cost or low-cost diagnostic services for those patients. - Methodist Health System Foundation
Methodist Health Systemseeks to provide breast health education and screening mammography services to the medically underserved population of Dallas County. Education will be offered to women 18 years and older that attend outreach and health fair events and mobile mammography sites. Screening mammograms will be offered to women 40 years old or older at Methodist Dallas Medical Center, Methodist Charlton Medical Center and various community locations by use of Methodist's mobile mammography unit. Diagnostic services will be offered at Methodist Dallas and Methodist Charlton Medical Centers and will include clinic visits (as needed for breast care), diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds and biopsies. - Methodist Richardson Medical Center - Asian Breast Health Outreach Project(ABHOP)
The ABHOP provides educational seminars, screening mammograms and diagnostic testing to empower the Asian community with the knowledge and tools to detect breast cancer early. Seminars are conducted in the native language of participants, and breast health materials are language specific and culturally appropriate.Screening mammograms and referrals are provided at no cost through the Center for Women’s Health at Methodist Richardson Medical Center for low-income, medically underserved Asian women. - Parkland Foundation
Parkland’s Breast Health Outreach Initiative began in 1990 to provide breast cancer screening, prevention and intervention services to Dallas County residents. Through its mobile mammography unit, Parkland provides mammography screenings, case management and breast education. - Planned Parenthood of Greater Texas (PPGT)
PPGT’s breast health program detects breast cancer at its earliest stages by providing uninsured women of Dallas County with breast self-awareness education and screening mammography. This grant enables PPGT to provide no-cost screening mammograms through referral programs in five Dallas County health centers. - UT Southwestern Medical Center, Center for Breast Care
UT Southwestern Breast Imaging Services extends its digital mobile mammography unit in local Dallas County communities to increase utilization of mammography as a screening tool. This effort encompasses education, screening and regular participation of uninsured Dallas County women. The mobile mammography unit serves to provide a digital, life-saving screening mammogram to women in the most convenient way possible, near home or work, with personalized service. - UT Southwestern School of Health Professions - Screening Our Sisters
Screening Our Sisters seeks to reduce late diagnosis of women in high-risk areas. Partnering with area churches, community organizations and health care providers, the program’s prevention events will offer breast cancer education, access to mobile mammography or links to other screening services. Project staff will provide client navigation services for services needed along the breast health continuum of care. - YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas
The purpose of YW Women's Health is to mobilize low-income, uninsured or underinsured women to make breast health a life-long habit. The program expands access to quality breast health services through a continuum of care to include education, mammogram screenings, diagnostic exams, transportation assistance, outreach and access to treatment.
In addition to recognizing grant recipients, Komen Dallas County presented the following awards during the Impact Awards Luncheon to honor its dedicated partners and volunteers:
- Outstanding Program – YWCA
YWCA initiated the formation of The Dallas Patient Navigation Action Coalition (PNAC) in 2008 to improve the coordination of care for the uninsured and underserved.PNAC unites breast health providers, identifies trends in service and access, and facilitates referrals among member agencies. Today, PNAC’s membership continues to grow thanks to the leadership of YWCA. - Outstanding New Volunteer – LaKisha Wells
Since beginning her volunteer service in March 2012, Ms. Wells has participated in more than
25 events. She also sits on Komen Dallas County’s Education and Impact Awards Committees and was featured in the New Promise campaign. - Outstanding Individual Volunteer – Kathy Harvel
For the past six years, Ms. Harvel has managed onsite registration for the Komen Dallas Race for the Cure at North Park Center, where more than 4,000 in-person registrations are accepted annually. She takes three days off work each year to provide this invaluable service.
- Outstanding Corporate Partner – Atmos Energy
In 2012, Atmos Energy doubled its gift to Komen Dallas County from the previous year and has contributed a total of $140,000 to the organization. In addition, Atmos Energy provides a special gift to each survivor at the Komen Dallas Race for the Cure.
- Christine Griffith Lifetime Volunteer – Carol Roehrig
Ms. Roehrighas volunteered for Komen Dallas County for eight years, serving the organization in a variety of capacities. She has served as Race Chair, on the Board of Directors and, most recently, as chair of the Grant Committee.
- Outstanding Community Service Group – Jackson Walker
Dallas legal firm Jackson Walker has provided Komen Dallas County with more than 60 hours of pro bono legal service. - Legacy Partnership – Tom Thumb
Tom Thumb has been the premier sponsor for the Komen Dallas Race for the Cure for six years, contributing more than $537,000 to the organization.
- Outstanding Individual Philanthropy – Sam Khoury
Since 2008, Mr. Khoury has hosted an Annual Pink Party to benefit Komen Dallas County, raising more than $10,000. - Outstanding Media Partner – Fox 4
For more than 10 years, Fox 4 has broadcast live from the Komen Dallas Race for Cure. Fox 4 provides a platform for Komen Dallas County to educate the community about breast cancer through the Race day coverage, Public Service Announcements and other media opportunities.
- Outstanding Community Fundraiser – The Beyond Foundation
The Beyond Foundation has contributed more than $85,000 to Komen Dallas County through funds raised from its annual Connie McGillen Memorial Tournament.
- Komen Dallas County Champion Award– Jan Lucio
Ms. Lucio dedicates her summer vacation to volunteering at the Komen Dallas County office. She provides support to a range of projects and events and is a member of the speaker’s bureau. In addition, she has been a member of the Pink Honor Roll since 2009, which recognizes the top 100 fundraisers for the Komen Dallas Race for the Cure.
