  • Interprofessional Initiative Steering Committee (Nichole Slykhous): committee held initial meeting and has opportunity to influence coordination of online modules with classroom activities; need for more members of student IPE committee
  • OHSU Ombudsman Merle Graybill (503-494-5397): New ombudsman for university students; available as an informal, independent, impartial, confidential resource for students to express concerns regarding equitable and fair treatment within the university (See additional information below)
  • OHSU Global (formerly Global Health Center) (Dr. Andy Harris): Dr. Harris is open to individual inquiries into global health opportunities; the change to OHSU Global has caused some disruption in student opportunities; the highest priority opportunities exist in SE Asia through existing OHSU relationships; Two upcoming events: OHSU Global event (October 8th in the Doernbecher Childrens Hospital main bay), World Carnival ($50)(October 9th in the CLSB atrium at 6pm and needs student volunteers from 5-8:30pm, student volunteers receive free admission, dinner, drinks)
  • Halloween Party: to be planned in the coming weeks, construction may require new location (tbd)
  • GSO/Alumni/All-Hill Welcome Fall BBQ: including flu shots, free OHSU tumbler
  • School Updates:
  • Rajkaran Sachdej (MS2): some upcoming elections will make way for new All-Hill reps (including, medical, nursing, PA, dental)
  • D. Kyle Robinson (MS): graduation date falls after many residency programs start, convention center has very limited availability
  • Tate Masunaga (DS3): concern over student safety after hours around CLSB, public safety to be contacted for upcoming meeting

  • Website Coordinator(Nichole Slykhous): Facebook site now up to date, BlogSpot and portal to follow
  • JBT Health and Wellness Center: outside insurance waiver deadline is October 8th (complete online)
  • Student Newsletter Committee(David Edwards): making progress toward integrating newsletter with online resource
  • Student Center/ Student Life (Karen Seresun; ): deadline for student interest group registration is October 2nd; Fall BBQ information fair registration inquiries email Karen; Dedra Daehn is unavailable to meet in September but arranging meetings in October with All-Hill and another meeting with a larger student group; Mug o’ Joe on October 26th
  • Student Center Events(Heather Ennis): Pool closed October 5th and maybe 6th; Gym closed September 16th and October 3rd; October 14th art show/sale; Blood drive September 16th in Student Center gym and September 30th at CHH/
  • March Wellness(Erich Knipschild): new classes begin September 21st
  • Library(Laura Ziegen and Stephanie Kerns): Guest author Michael Helquist will lead a discussion of remarkable OHSU alumna Dr. Marie Equi, one of the first woman physicians in the Northwest and a powerful advocate for women’s rights (September 17th, 10 to 11am, OHSU main library)

OHSU Ombudsman: Informal, Independent, Impartial, and Confidential

The OHSU Ombudsman services are available to all faculty, staff, administrators, students, post-doctoral fellows, trainees and volunteers, offering a safe, confidential place to discuss campus-related issues and explore possibilities for informally addressing concerns.

The overarching mission of the Ombudsman is twofold: to ensure that every member of the university community receives equitable and fair treatment, and due process; and to support and facilitate a positive working and learning environment through identification of emerging and immediate trends and risks.

Informal: The Ombudsman will listen and review matters; help identify options; make inquiries and make referrals as appropriate; and/or facilitate resolutions in an informal manner such as shuttle diplomacy or mediation.

Independent: Communication to the office does not constitute notice to the University. The Ombudsman Office functions independently of the hierarchy of the university, and does not report nor create records about the substance of conversations.

Impartial: The Ombudsman does not advocate for either side in a dispute, nor represent management or visitors to the office.

Confidential: The Ombudsman is committed to protecting the identity of participants and the confidentiality of information that is shared. Because confidentiality, neutrality and informality are critically important, communications with the office are made with the understanding that they are confidential and off-the-record.

The Ombudsman Does: / The Ombudsman Does Not:
Listen to concerns / Tell people what they should do
Coach toward resolution / Determine guilt or innocence
Explain policy and make referrals / Give legal advice
Provide information about formal and informal options / Receive official "notice" for OHSU about complaints, grievances
Facilitate communication between visitors to office and others / Investigate, adjudicate or testify in formal OHSU processes
Apply shuttle diplomacy and mediatiion as appropriate / Take sides in a dispute
Recommend changes in policy, procedure or administrative decisions / Require changes in policy, procedure or administrative decisions

In limited circumstances the Ombudsman may not maintain confidentiality of certain information, including disclosures involving imminent threats to safety and mandatory reporting required by law, such as child abuse. Although it is highly uncommon, the Ombudsman may be required to disclose information as part of a formal external legal process. However, OHSU will not require the Ombudsman to participate in any formal process inside OHSU.
